To start off, i started bass about a month ago (long time eh?) but i really like it, and am seriouslly considering taking it to a higher level once i've got the money and skillz. I figure this would all happen in maybe a year or so, so im looking for mid level power/price stuff for both bass and an amp.

Ok, i'm looking for an amp with a decent amount of power, say 75-175 watts, but probably right in the middle with a good 125 or so. I figure it should be able to work both as a private practice amp, a garage band get-together, and a small venue...thing. Anyhoo, I was looking at the gallien-krueger backline 115 combo amp, it's in their 2001 catalouge if ya want to see it (and prob at their site). Would this work for what im trying to do?

As for my bass, right now i have a Squier Affinity P-bass. Nothin special, except a black pick guard (OoOoO). So, my range for this would be around $600, but up to $800 or maybe $900 if i find something that i really need. So, what is a good bass for this? Both practice, band playings, and smaller venue type stuff. I'm always doin research on this stuff, but any input would be appreciated!

Ampeg has a nice 100w amp with a 15" for not bad money, which I've thought looked kinda cool. Check out the Bass Player magazine archives online for a good shootout of a bunch of nice combo amps (amp & speaker cabinet in one).

In your price range, you could probably find a decent USA Fender (an obvious choice), or a nice used G&L, Stingray...I'd say check out Carvin http://www.carvin.com for max bang for the buck at that pricepoint.
