if you sell the one that's worth the least (hamer?) for a very low price, your wife might not make the suggestion again next year.

Grave,
I'm assuming that you are asking us because you don't have a favorite. It would seem that with the Ken Lawrence and Kinal basses, you like one more than the other. For example, you may prefer the MKB-5 over the MK-21 - sell the MK-21.
You may also want to see which will get you the most money, based on value and condition. If you do the opposite of what wager47 suggested and sell a higher value bass, it might show some willingness on your part to make some money available. And if there is any paperwork around that shows what you paid for these items, she'll know if you're trying to sell off the least expensive bass.

I'm still waiting for cash to be available to buy one good bass, so I guess I don't have a strong appreciation of your position (or I'd make you an offer for a Kinal). I'm sure each of these basses is beautiful and smooth, so it will be a hard decision. At least you'll have some excellent guitars after one is sold, and maybe you can pick up another one in the future when the financials are different.

If I disagree on things like this with my wife, I usually end up realizing she was right. It's been 23 years, and I know it's been harder on her than on me!!

why not keep all 5 basses and figure out another to make the money? you live in America, the land of opertunity; there has to be another way...

Hell, mow lawns, wash cars, have a bake sell, or become a prostitute; one of these ways has got to work. seriously, i would explore all you options before losing one of those killer basses.

On a similar note, I was planning on selling my '73 P Bass to raise money for a '61 P I found for a good price. I have a buyer for the '73, but recent changes in the economy have made me rethink putting the money into a bass that will mostly sit at home. I only play P Bass when I'm doing roots music, either blues, country, r&b etc. The rest of the time, I want my 24 fret 5 string Carvin. I need the range to do what I want to do. Since I hardly ever play roots gigs these days, I think I can do just fine with the '88 Japanese Fender P in the house that belongs to my girlfriend. It's a decent bass, has a few bad notes on the 18th and 19th frets on the D and A strings, but hey, it's a P bass, you're not supposed to play them anyway.

While it may seem sad to choose not to buy a vintage axe, I think it's a good thing. It's a step in the right direction for me to have some restraint. Not to be a worry wart, but I think it may be a wise move to have some extra $$ handy.

So, the '73 goes away. It's a great bass, but I never get too attached to P basses or Stingrays. My Jazz, well...they'll have to pry that one from my cold, dead fingers!
