I need some new strings on my Azola EUB. What does anyone use? What do you like/dislike about strings you have tried?

Thanks.

It would probably be better if you stated your own preferences as far as strings go, so that we can respond with strings that meet your criteria.

I did a survey among double bassists a while back, and will soon be putting up a form to get additional data on strings that have come out since the last update, but you may want to breeze by http://www.gollihur.com/dbstrings.html for some other URB string evaulations.

Bob,

I have yourt site marked and am checking it out. I play jazz almost exclusivly on my Azola Bug Bass.

I am thinking Spirocore.

Steve

I would lean in that direction, also, for jazz. Sorry the string page isn't that up to date. I would also consider Corelli 370, which are my favorites for jazz and other genres, though the Spirocore Weichs are more or less jazz classics. I have a set of Corelli 370M on my homebuilt EUB.

Bumping this thread up since I appear to be in something of the same boat. I've had the stock strings on my Azola EUB since I bought it. Also, seeing as things may have changed since Bob responded to the question, I was wondering what might be a good set of strings for my bass. I'm playing almost exclusively pizzicato on pop/rock/jazz material.

Also, any general recommendations from some of the other EUB players in the forum?

I've been loving my Pirastro Obligatos. They have a softer-gut like sound for pizz (less sustain than steel strings, though...I happen to like this but some players won't), are easier to play, and sound great when played arco.

I've heard great things about Corellis as well. I've used Spirocores for years and they growl like crazy...good pizz strings. Scratchy arco sound, though.

Hmmm, so sounds like the Pirastro Obligatos are a good balance between pizz and arco? I'm not sure what's on my new/old EUB, but I'd make a guess that they're Spirocores...the bow sound does seem to get scratchy easily...

Don't mistake a scratchy sound for bad technique. I thought my Spirocores were useless for bowing when I first started messing around with the bow. I told my teacher, Martin Wind, that my strings sounded too scratchy and demonstrated it for him.

He responded by going "Really? I use those strings too." He then took my bow and bowed a big, loud & clean open low E that shook the walls. Then he played a bunch of fast passages in the middle register that had super clean articulation.

He handed the bow back to me and said "let's work on showing you how to use this thing properly rather than complain about the strings."

And so it went.

Were you using the Pirastro's on your Messenger Ben?

I had spirocores on the Messenger...and then traded them in for D'Addario "Hybrid" strings a couple years later.

Haven't tried the obligatos on my electric upright, although I've been thinking about it.

ROTF...yeah, that's why I'm engaging a teacher for that particular technique!
