Yeah, another one of these posts.....

My only pre right now is a vintech 1272. I like it fine - full and thick - however I'd also like something that's more open and present sounding. Looking for a stereo pre, tube or solid state, don't need compression/EQ on it. About $1K used. What's a good compliment to the 1272?

Look at the GainStation 1 from SPL
http://www.spl-usa.com/gainstation1/2272_in_short_E.html

It is a one channel unit for about 600 € and you can have both worlds, transparent solid state curcuit + tube curcuit.

Another unit is the F35II from Lake People - clean, transparent and fast for that price range.

I don't know what it costs nowadays but if you looking for a clean mike amp the earthworks can be interested for you.

They have a mono and a stereo and I'm not sure a quatro pre amp.

try and find some used ward beck 460 mic pre's.
Also called 'the canadian neve". Except they have more headroom. And sound as good as neve's. IMO.

A great complement in your price range would be the Sytek MPX-4Aii
