dohhhhh6 Posted August 31, 2003 Share Posted August 31, 2003 Alrightey, I finally picked up my amp (Crate BFX100) but am having many problems understand all these knob thingys all over the hot sweetness! So could someone please explain to me a few things? -15db push-in button by input: What does this do exactly? I know that it makes the volume go down, but that's absolutely it. Peak light next to gain control: I have no idea what this does either. It usually flashes once per note that I play. Contour knob: No idea... either. I currently just leave it in the middle, but there's no effect that I see. Active push-in button next to Contour knob: What does this do? I think it makes everything louder, but not sure. Limit light next to Master volume knob: I think this tells me when I'm hurting the speaker. Is it extremely unsafe to play with this light on? I don't want to hurt my speaker, but it doesn't play too loud (or loud as I'll be wanting it to play later) without the damn light coming. I really need some info on this one. And now for a few more amp related questions. What exactly is the difference between Gain and Master volume knobs? I know distorted guitars the crave Gain, but what EXACTLY is the difference? There's a speaker input thing on my amp. Does that mean I can hook my 15 watt, 1x10 amp up to that and get a little more umph? Any other good tips for getting the most out of my amp? That's to lower the input if you're using an active bass, so you don't overdrive the preamp. Peak light next to gain control: I have no idea what this does either. Leave it at -15db on anybass. The contour knob (theres a button that activates it next to it) all the way left cuts highs and boosts lows, mid position is pretty much flat, and all the way left cuts lows and boosts highs. earljam Posted August 31, 2003 Share Posted August 31, 2003 I had one of these briefly. The limit lite shouldn't stay on- its ok if its flashing occasionally. Is your bass active or passive? If its active you may want to cut your gain. My Fender (passive) liked the gain about 10 o'clock. start with the countour at 12 o'clock and the eq flat. Also use a long cord and stand out in front of your amp so all the sound isn't going to your knees. This amp should be loud enough for most applications and if I remember right it has a line out to the PA. What are your Guitar players using? Leave it at -15db on anybassNo. These controls exist to bring the level of your bass up to line level - depending on your pickups and electronics the amount of gain required will vary. The -15dB pad is there in case you have an active bass with a particularly hot output. The gain control should be turned up until the peak light flashes on your loudest notes and then turned back down a smidgen. If your bass is so loud that you have to have the gain control down near zero then try engaging the pad whic should let you turn the knob up further without clipping. If you use drastic EQ you may notice the preamp distorting even though your gain was set correctly (the clip light may or may not flash depending on where it meters the level).
