She already had a TV show. That's where I first heard of her, and first realized she's not a great singer. The show featured her raw singing in the studio, before the comping and AutoTune had been applied. She was unable to successfully hit many of her notes, and it was obvious to her and her engineers/producers. It was pretty embarrassing to watch. I felt sorry for her, and this was LONG before the SNL debacle.
Now her sister Jessica, on the other hand, really can sing.
