Hmmm...Seems People Don't Want to Go Back to the Office

As far as I know, he never bothered to learn my name. Called me John because he said I was "the same motherfucker as Belushi"...

Was he always as gruff and "hard" as it seems he was in the press "public" depiction?

As far as I could tell, only if he didn't like you...and he seemed to like me for some reason. I have stories that range from sitting and talking to him for hours on the tour bus in the States (he showed me an autographed picture of Jimi Hendrix he had!) to watching old boxing videos with him and a few band members in his suite in Switzerland while we messed with his DX7. I think he was awesome, not to mention pretty damn funny.

I was taught early that being too formal to Miles was a big mistake. I'm from Philly, so that was easy for me... :idk::D

People have already forgotten how grim things were for awhile last year. That's an interesting phenomenon that I suppose has always been around, during times of war, but I've not experienced: people forget.

People have very short memories these days. I was going to comment more, but I forgot what I was going to say.

That's ok - and, excuse me, but...who are you again? Who are you with??

So how about performing musicians who haven't had a tour gig for a year, but have been racking up the pennies with streaming concerts. Suppose some of them have become accustomed to not traveling, not dealing with stages and sound equipment, and such. Might some of them decide they'd rather create concerts from home, and maybe find some other way to pick up some spare change, like maybe teaching, adding tracks or assisting with song writing - taking on the role of producer . . . .

My local bank branch is still closed to walk in because they cannot find workers.

My neighbor who owns a popular burger/hot dog joint bought a food truck and fixed it up. They have never used it because they cannot find workers.

My sister went to Macy's and picked out 4 pair of shoes. She did not get to buy them because there were no workers to go to the stock room and get her size.

One of my favorite local restaurants is now closed Monday and Tuesday because they don't have enough workers to keep the doors open every day.

I watched Office Space again tonight, with some friends. It's a Mike Judge movie, and one of the premises is that the human experience is not about working a cubicle, chained to a computer.

It isn't.

I think what's going to happen is wages are going to go up. We're going to pay more for what we want, but that's okay. I truly believe there are people who want to work in food trucks, who like the social piece of restaurants, and would like to work in a shoe store. But they don't, because other gigs pay more money.

I've made my decision. I made a lot of money at Gibson, and I think I earned it. And I could try to get a similar gig. But now, I can make the money I need to pay my bills, and more importantly, I'm doing what I want to do.

Europeans, by and large, have the work/life balance thing figured out to a FAR greater extent than Americans. When people talk about Europe being "socialist," that's total B.S. They pay more taxes in return for added value, like health care, public transportation that actually works, and education. In return, they get to spend more time with their families, paid vacations where they can recharge they souls, and be able to spend time on what they love to do. If they have to go to the hospital, they don't have to worry that they'll need to declare bankruptcy. They don't live to work, they work to live. Yeah, it's a generalization, and it's not that way in all European countries, but it's not far from the truth. In all the surveys about which countries have the happiest people...the United States is not in the top 10 (for the record, they are, in order, Finland, Norway, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and Australia).

It's time for a recalibration. Cubicles are just plain wrong.

During Musician's Friend's heyday, when they ruled the online etailer world, I visited several times. It always seemed that the people there were talking to each other, gabbing with customers about gear, and so on. They were dedicated to what they were doing, and they loved it. And they were wildly successful. When Guitar Center wanted MF (and Harmony Central) to become part of Cubicle World, Musician's Friend went into a tailspin, from which it never recovered. Neither did Harmony Central, which had been incredibly successful.

Draw your own conclusions...

The problem is when they made it easier to get unemployment for people adversely affected by Covid, they made it easier to get for everyone. The unemployment system is a mess. Honestly, I don't blame anyone for choosing unemployment over minimum wage. When you get unemployment the world opens up. You can get food stamps, food bank supplements, and assistance on everything from medical coverage to transportation. As soon as you start making minimum wage the doors start closing. I used to feel sorry for my data entry employees. They were bottom rung, lowest paid of anyone, and really would be better off staying home and drawing. I did what I could encouraging them to get further education, build a working reputation, and apply for higher paying jobs within the agency. If they were willing to go to school I was always willing to adjust their schedules when necessary. When I retired I had A LOT of ex-date entry people working higher level jobs. That is the one thing that I am most proud of.

In my opinion unemployment needs a major change. Instead of paying people to sit home and do nothing they need to focus on assisting people who are trying to get by on minimum wage. Help with daycare and see how many mothers are suddenly available to work. Transportation can be a big issue in rural areas. Food stamps and medical coverage should be available to anyone making less than $15 and hour. And I now believe that minimum wage should go up to $15 an hour, something I was against just months ago. Everyone deserves a chance at a decent wage. The economy will adjust.
