OT: I just submitted some photos to AdobeStock...

Recommended Posts

I just submitted some photos to AdobeStock, and these were approved and included in their catalog. I have thousands of others, it's a hobby, and I'll submit more when I get a chance. As I do I'll post them here http://www.nortonmusic.com/stock_images.html but right now I'm proud to become a professional (I hope) photographer. Perhaps I'll make enough money to buy some new gear (or a cup of coffee) ;)

I know it's off-topic. Thanks for indulging.

Congrats Notes!!!!

Stock photography used to be quite lucrative, I know a gentleman here who licensed a few images for national advertising campaigns.

It has evolved a marketing plan similar to music streaming, the inevitable force of the interwebz.

Umpty Bajillion lovely photos (your work is very nice by the way!!!!) available for low licensing fees.

I was a photography major in college, I consider that to be one of my many poor life decisions now. One can do pretty well photographing weddings (playing them is way more fun!!!!) and/or executive portraiture if you live near enough business.

If Adobe has changed anything about the current paradigms for stock photography, it's probably to their advantage. They've joined a good sized pool of stock agencies with more photos than any of us will ever have time to look at.

And yes, we ALL wish we'd taken the photo of the wet, angry kitten and made the "Don't Tell Me What Kind of Day To Have" posters. But we didn't and those days are gone. Sad.Cheers, Kuru

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

Agreed. I used to occasionally run into photographers who were making much or all of their living from stock photography. The bottom has completely fallen out of that market.

I've made some money from my night photos via Getty Images in the past. I've made more money selling photos to magazines, books and newspapers, but that could be because I've never really tried to do stock photography.

Best wishes, Notes.

Nice! BTW, we have a photography sub-forum here at MPN (The Big Picture) and you'd be very welcome to join and share your work there as well.

Thanks, Joe.

Craig, here is how it works.

You set up an account at Adobe https://contributor.stock.adobe.com/en

Most of the menus are easy enough to navigate, what you look for first is "upload". There you upload your photos.

Adobe Stock requires jpeg format for all submissions.

Minimum image resolution: 4MP

Maximum image resolution: 100MP

Maximum file size: 45MB

That's all there is to it.

The pictures will be evaluated for technical quality (they are picky about focus, motion blur, etc.) and if they pass the technical test, they include them in the catalog. I'm doing about 75% in the approval department. Most of the rejects are fine points of focus. When filming wildlife that can move unexpectedly, small parts of the image can be out of focus (like if a bird slightly flutters a few feathers as you push the button).

There are zillions of pictures there, so I don't expect to get rich overnight ;), and I don't do anti-social media, so promoting myself isn't going to be easy. But if something sells, I get a commission and even if it's enough for a cup of coffee, it's more than I had before I uploaded. Plus there is a chance one of my shots will be just what someone is looking for.

I got approved for two more:

I've got a lot of pictures, unfortunately the one I took in the early days of digital photography don't have sufficient resolution to get approved. Before digital, I took a few thousand slides with a film Canon EOS camera. If scanning them produces a good enough image, I'll submit some of them as well.

There are other places to upload, I think ShutterStock is the second largest and after I get further in the learning curve of how to edit the photos for best results, I'll open a couple of accounts. Adobe lets you keep your copyright and doesn't restrict you to use their site exclusively, it's probably a good idea to check this out on any other site you might join.
