OT: How I spent my holiday weekend.

Recommended Posts

I've never been one to dive into those insane Black Friday events; they remind me of Dawn of the Dead.

My idea of a nice quiet holiday weekend? Yesterday, I laid out 30 concrete pavers; 9 of them to make a nice safe 4 ft. x 4ft. platform for one of those self-contained fire pits everyone has now, another 21 to make a 25-foot-long walkway in my back garden bed. At 36 pounds each, that's just over half a ton of concrete, and I had to move each one at least twice, once to get them in the wheelbarrow, and again to set them in place. Add in a 40-pound bag of sand for leveling, firewood for the fire pit, digging and leveling the areas for both, and laying out landscape fabric, and that was my day. We did get to enjoy the new fire pit in the evening.

This morning, I'm heading out to load my Jeep with mulch to finish the back bed. When I'm done with this part of the project, I'll have pretty much re-designed my entire back yard, and that's a lot of area. I'd been thinking about this plan for a while, but one of the driving elements was a large old tree dropping out of a neighbor's yard, around a year ago, which completely changed the light profile. Now, I'm getting hours of afternoon light in an area that was heavily shaded before. If everything works out in the Spring, I'll have videos.

Tomorrow, it's supposed to rain, and if you've had any experience moving wet mulch, you know why I'm heading out today. Happy Sun Day, all!

You are a hard working man Sir Winston!!!!

My hat is off to you.

I did a bit of Black Friday much earlier and online. I've been wanting a different drum software and IK's Modo Drum was tempting. Their early Black Friday price sent me over the edge, with my crossgrade and 34 Jam Points I got the full package for $86. I really like it, the sounds are great and the options are staggering and useful.

Happy Holidays to All!!!!

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

@KuruPrionz -

Thank you, sir!

Nice catch on that Drum software. We should talk Percussion sometime, I've been playing for just over 30 years, not as long as I've been playing Guitar (more like 55, in that case) but long enough.

I went out and got 10 bags of damp mulch this morning - good ones, 3 cubic foot bags - along with a bale of hay to spread along the far back dirt path. I laid down another 25 running feet of landscaping fabric, and finished the walkway area about half an hour ago. I'm very happy with it, it makes the whole area look complete.

Sitting here at my Music desk right now, freshly showered, with a favorite pipe (all legal, I assure you), getting ready to take my Taylor outside for what remains of the afternoon. I hope everyone here has enjoyed their day, as well!

I am all in on talking percussion/drums. We could create a thread in the drum forum, it's pretty much asleep and has been since probably before I joined.

Something like "Guitarists talking about percussion since Drummers don't" or such.

Besides, in the classifications used to define orchestra instruments - guitar is a member of the percussion family and so is piano.

Or, we could fire one up here and see who amongst our fellow percussionists chimes in?

I did some cooking for our tiny, cursed Thanksgiving. Watched some videos for my state continuing legal education requirements. Scratched dog ears.

All in all, pretty low-key.

Scratching dog ears is always a good thing . . .

I cleaned the gutters to prepare for the rains. Still no rain or snow in sight for at least another week or more and we've only had 33% of average rain so far. They keep building houses all around me and a shopping center, but fail to ask where's the water going to come from? :idk:
Take care, Larryz

We had a nice, relatively small gathering (only 8 relatively immediate family members, as compared to the 30 or so we normally have at my father's house). Good to have my youngest son home form college. He is a big help in the kitchen. We spatchcocked the turkey, and used a Cajun injection marinade. I think he just likes saying "spatchcock"; but it did cut down on cooking time and 'twas delicious.

The day after, my band played at a local brewery. It was our debut as a trio, as our lead guitar/keyboard player bowed out the week before. Went well with only one rehearsal as the trio. Seems this will be how we proceed, as he has some arm injury and is moving out of state in a few months, anyway. I will miss his playing, and doing his original tunes. Not sure if this group is right for most of the stuff I write, but time will tell.
