Mykhailo
Which of these two bass lines is the correct one for 'When The Music"s Over?' (specifically scale degree 7, i.e. leading note.) https://photos.app.goo.gl/eS9gK5F4KcD7D8wV8 My ears hear him alternating between 7 and flat 7 (D# and D, i.e. version 1) but the published score says he just stays on 7 the entire time (i.e. version 2) I think the published score is wrong. i.e. I"m hearing him alternate between 7 and flat 7 every other measure...yes? The 'published score' was one of those piano-vocal scores, so maybe they simplified it as switching the leading note a half step every other measure is not exactly the easiest thing to execute with accuracy. SamuelBLupowitz
I'm pretty sure it's the flat 7 every time, but it sounds like that bass note might be a hair sharp -- makes sense if that's the Rhodes Piano Bass, which I'm pretty sure it is, rather than their frequent in-studio augmentation with a bass guitar. When I last saw Gov't Mule a few years ago at my local theater, they closed their show with this song. It was pretty great. Quote Samuel B. Lupowitz Musician. Songwriter. Food Enthusiast. mate stubb
When I used to play it, I always played the flatted 7th (D). But I freely admit that when we learned it I was playing wholly from memory. I never did go back and shed it carefully. I think it makes not a lick of difference to the audience impact. Mykhailo
I agree...and I doubt Ray played it the same every time. Just curious what people are hearing. That"s two votes for flat seven. Serves me right for trusting a published score over my own ears! ð
elif
First listen in a long time and I noticed that during the bridge, JM is singing the maj7th on "Mu-sic - Is your spe-cial friend". Also, I don't hear a dominant 7th in the rhythm. Does the published chart show an Amaj for that chord?
Mykhailo
It"s A7 in the published chart.
Reezekeys
Sure sounds like it's a D natural every time, no alternating.
Mykhailo
Yup, D natural every time is now in the muscle memory... Thanks everyone! ð
Shamanczarek
I have played this a lot of times on a Piano Bass and never gave it much thought but I've always played D every time as it sits under the hand position so well. Now I'm going to try using D# as it makes perfect sense as an approach note. The Doors had a Bass player in the studio for most of the Strange Days album. This is apparently the only song on the album to use Piano Bass. Morrison was not present in the studio when the song was recorded and Manzarek did a guide vocal. Morrison overdubbed his entire vocal track. Mykhailo
Both the D natural and the D sharp are used...I"ve listened to several live takes now and he seems to freely alternate. At certain times during the song, he sticks with the D, and during other sections, he alternates between the two. I realize I"m splitting hairs here, but this is one of my fav tunes of all time, and I"m arranging it for my two solo ensembles, (organ, and piano trio...),of which I am off to rehearse with now! (organ, and yes, a Gibson G-101 replete with a piano bass! ð)
Shamanczarek
Here you can see Ray's left hand pretty well at about 3:00 and 6:00. As far as I can tell he is only hitting D each time. SamuelBLupowitz
(organ, and yes, a Gibson G-101 replete with a piano bass! ð)I would really like to see a little more clearly how to get the Piano Bass to balance on the G101... right now my Piano Bass is sequestered across my studio from the G-101 on an x-stand, which feels wrong for multiple reasons...
