If you had a very rare set of P Bass pickups...

Going all the way through the first one, that is one versatile pickup! Lot's of useable "tones" with just a tone knob. Thank goodness you followed my above advice! :D

It was good advice... Thanks, lug! :)

For the curious-

The bass parts were played separately, then assembled in order with the beat. There is no tone shaping besides the tone knob on the bass, no compression or editing after (besides putting them in order). The strings are older Chromes. Six foot cable into Focusrite interface. Dunlop Tortex (orange) pick.

The first ones are with fingers with tone fully down, the next ones are at gradual turns of the tone knob (approx a fifth of a turn), the next ones are with foam and fingers, then foam and pick with tone knob full, half, off, then the final one is full tone, slap.

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

I put headphones on and gave the demo a spin.

Those are nice sounding pickups, the low end is solid and there no matter what you do with the higher frequencies.

Good balance between strings too.

You pretty much have it covered for bass tones, just play and smile!

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

Honestly, I'm not sure I even represented them well... They are really remarkable.

Thanks for listening.

Honestly, I can tell a great deal about those pickups from listening to your recording. None of us ever make a recording we are happy with and posting it on SoundCloud won't improve it.

Pretend it isn't you and listen again. It all sounds like the same bass and bassist but there is quite a range of tones there. For straight in with no EQ or compression it sounds really good.

I've been working on my own bass tones lately, getting ready to make some records. I've tried all sorts of fun experiments, not all of them have worked. I'm using EMG active P-bass pickups, one set is the A (Alnico) set. I've got the stock tone control installed. One bass has D'Addario nickel roundwounds tuned to EADG and the other is fretless with Rotosound Tru Bass strings tuned BEAD.

Both are more or less P-J basses and there is a similarity in the tones. I'm sure part of that is how I play them.

Best thing so far is plugging into Tech 21 Bass Driver DI version 2 and running a second feed from the parallel output. I get a bass with zero effects on one track and one dialed up with EQ and Sansamp on the other. They seem to be perfectly in phase, which is nice. It's a keeper, I love that little box.

Thanks, both of you. :)

They really are remarkable, and I'm glad my recording is useful.

It's a little daunting to make a recording you know will be heard, possibly anticipated even, and know in advance you have to record straight in without processing. I'm used to a little compression in a mix, at least... :D
