chris loeffler
The EHX Mel9 (mellowtron) is AMAZING when blended in at 25-30% to create synth pads for acoustic or electric parts. Mayhaps we create an "unintentional" use thread?
KuruPrionz
"Happy Accident" thread? I'm down. Not this week but probably most recent - saw an Ibanez Gio Mikro at the thrift store and thought it looked fun for a kid. Had stickers all over it, I hate stickers - especially removing them. Checking out the rest of the store, I thought "short scale, 6 adjustable saddles for intonation - NASHVILLE TUNING." That is a 6 string guitar with just the high strings (octaves) that a 12 string has. Very commonly used in country but most "conversions" only sound in tune on the Cowboy Chords. So I got it, got all the stickers off and dialed it in The tuners could be better but they work. It plays in tune up and down the neck, super chimey. I just lowered the pickups way down. Tracked underneath an acoustic guitar you'd never know it was a solid body. Been wanting something like this for a while. Photo attached. Larryz
Here's one I saw done a few years back using the 3way as a kill switch. Many may already know this technique but it may be worth sharing as a "secret of the week" for others: Have fun with it! Nice one, this "effect" was probably "discovered" by somebody with a cord going bad. Quote It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is. Larryz
I saw this being done at a Marshal Tucker concert while sitting up front and zeroing in on the lead player doing this technique. Like the guy in the video says "you may have to replace a switch now and then but hey, it's rock and roll" (paraphrasing). I was thinking the same thing that this could be pretty hard on the switch after a few concerts and mentioned it to my guitar buds at the concert with me LOL! It was quite some time ago on this forum that some one posted a cheap homemade stutter switch on the floor made out of a tuna can. It could double as a kill switch. I thought this would be a better way to go and much easier to replace the switch than a 3way on a guitar. Not sure if it could be worked as fast as a 3way though? Cute idea... Caevan O’Shite
The EHX Mel9 (mellowtron) is AMAZING when blended in at 25-30% to create synth pads for acoustic or electric parts. Mayhaps we create an "unintentional" use thread? Yeah, that's cool, I bet it sounds and works great like that! I'd like to have a Mel9, myself. Using a Boss RT-20 "Rotary Ensemble" Leslie-sim pedal, I found that when you put the Brake on (which stops the simulated rotary-motion, just like the Brake on a real Leslie), and adjust the "Direct" level higher than the "Effect" level, beautifully strange resonant tones that sound like the amp is in a giant pipe or chimney can be dialed-in. If you listen very closely to rhythm-guitar tracks the song "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin (on the Physical Graffiti album), especially at about 3:16 heading into the lead-guitar solo segment, you can hear the kind of sound I'm talking about here. Reportedly, some guitar-tracks on some Led Zepelin recording sessions done at Bron-Yr-Aur, a 1700's stone cottage in the English countryside, were recorded with a small combo-amp placed in a fireplace, with microphones hung down the chimney; I strongly suspect that these parts in "Houses of the Holy" may have been among them. You can get very similar sounds with a Boss RT-20 set the way I describe above!
