"How do you find a keyboardist who wants to play?"

Recommended Posts

Well I"m an outlier from the dominant themes here in many ways. First caveat is I have no idea what the new generation does thinks wants or will learn or if guitars will remain dominant.

I think more guys learned guitars because they grew of age when overwhelming dominance of guitar in rock n roll. It becomes self-fulfilling, we all remember seeing a great show at a young age, watching the enormous crowd scream uncontrolled, and think 'damnit - it want to do that!'. Well - as guitar dominated music, more guys learned guitar.

I love loud guitar, dirty rocking hard ass guitar. I have no problem finding bands to play in on keys, because of that count imbalance of guitars to keys out there. I have no trouble finding my voice in any band i played in. I"m a rocker at core, so of course i love loud dirty guitar. I find a way to fit into the mix without making it too tame

The baiting I do is purely for entertainment value. Please feel free to ignore it.

I like the points everyone brings up in the discussions. Guitarists and keybaordists both have their struggles.

It seems likely to me that a post that includes the phrase "You're part of the problem" is part of the problem. It's one thing to have a passionate opinion about a musical practice -- I have several. It's another thing altogether to move into ad hominem snarking. I'm sometimes guilty of that myself -- and when I am, it's still wrong to do it.

Like you, I've not seen other musicians running down keyboard players

bandmix.com is dominated by guitarists and hostile to keyboard players. They run down keyboard players when their posts get deleted from their forums. Of course you've not seen it, they engage in censorship before anybody can witness it.

I've reached the point where this is clearly a diminishing returns thread, so I'm going to bow out.

You folks have fun.

This is not diminishing returns. This is your elitist disposition talking because you refuse to admit that someone other than guitar players dared to offer a solution to the problem. You admitted that when you found it curious that keyboard players were in possession of secrets that guitar players didn't know. You had nothing to reply when attenuators suck yet I countered that no guitar player complained of Tom Scholz using one. You had nothing to reply when asked when does the hair splitting become insignificant. You had nothing to reply when I countered that many keyboardists play their EPs through tube guitar amps quite frequently. Your answer was to walk away. You're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

So long, coward. I don't engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Want a reply?

Okay.

Rather than waste my time writing a lengthy post to break it down for you, I'll simply suggest that you (or anyone else who happens to be interested) Google "cone breakup." Or "Chladni patterns," just to look at pretty pictures. The driver's cone ceases behaving as a piston. It happens when you get loud. I guess they didn't cover those when you were getting your EE.

It's the nonlinear stuff that matters when you're talking about guitar amps and speakers at volume, not tame little RCL networks.

There are other points as well, but cone breakup alone is enough to break [*ahem*] any 'rational' argument you might attempt to make into pieces so small they'd make dust look huge. Add the other stuff and it's beyond slam dunk.

Battle of wits with an unarmed mind? You lost. Clearly this is an emotional thing with you, but there are rational aspects (albeit chaotic) that will explain it all. It's called "physics" not "elitist."

Have fun learning, though. It's kinda cool to figure this stuff out, but you'll have to work your way past your anger issues first.

I have no pity or mercy for players who must deafen for the sake of tone.
KEMPER PROFILER. I can get screaming tone that I can whisper over...

In the meantime, someone needs to explain Foo Fighters to me:

Three guitarists, drums, bass, and Rami Jaffee on keyboards. I see him playing back there, but I swear I have never heard even an iota of keyboards in a Foo Fighters song...

It's the nonlinear stuff that matters when you're talking about guitar amps and speakers at volume, not tame little RCL networks.

What do you think happens to an output transformer - an inductor - in a dimed Marshall amp? It saturates and becomes non-linear.

What do you think happens to a speaker coil - an inductor - when played loud? It saturates and becomes non-linear.

What do you think happens to the inductor in the tame little RCL circuit in an emulator when overdriven? It saturates and becomes non-linear.

If you were an EE, you would had known that.

Once again, I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

You were challenged. I rebuked your lack of evidence that keyboard players are getting run down, that keyboard players dared to be in possession of secrets, that no guitar player complained of Tom Scholz, that keyboardists use tube guitar amps to play EPs through... and your response was EVASION.

You evade my challenges on top of refusing to accept input from someone who freely and generously offers insight into a solution, yet somehow that makes me a loser? Please. The woman I used to be married to used gaslighting on me - I didn't come here to face such manipulative tactics that should had stayed in grade school where it belongs, but I guess some people refuse to grow up.

You cannot be reasoned with. Goodbye.

I do not approve of your accusations of ad hominem. Ad hominem is when you cease to dispute the viewpoints of the other person and then attack the person themselves instead of attacking the viewpoints. I never ceased to dispute his viewpoints - he chose to "bow out", he chose to evade my challenges, he chose to refuse input on solutions.

And you accuse ME of ad hominem? I find that an attempt to defend a guitar player in a keyboard forum by using gaslighting is highly offensive.

My wife's explanation for everything is "Dave Grohl is a witch." I'm not sure exactly what she means by that, but she's very adamant. Me, I'm more of a Them Crooked Vultures guy myself... but at this point it's been over ten years since their album came out, so I don't know if I should hold my breath for John Paul Jones coming back into the fold.

I"ve covered Foo Fighters. Sometimes ... rarely... keys get featured. It was a Rock band and I played both keys and guitars. The biggest Foo keyboard song we did was Pretender. I think he is just in the band for those very few moments when Dave wants some background pads.

Yeah, but Grohl has stated that Jaffee is now a full-fledged member of the band. Good for him I guess, if he doesn't mind setting up behind the amp stacks...

Maybe it's not quite as loud back there.

If the (likely substantial) check clears, I'd be setting up wherever they suggest.....

Good for him for becoming a full member. Once touring gets back to normal in 12-24 months, he'll be making bank for sure. My guess is with their guarantee and merch sales, FF might gross $.5-1M a show. If a substantial portion of that is going to a keyboard player, I say "bravo"!

I've heard from more than a few people who have interacted with him that Dave is a good guy. Not much ego and fair to those around him.....

I've heard the same. I'm not the biggest fan of the Foo's music, but anyo band who lets Rick Astley perform his greatest hit with them, in the style of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", deserves respect.

Cheers, Mike.

I like a few songs but am not a big fan of the Foo Fighters but Grohl has always seemed to be a regular guy with no ego. I'd never turn down a chance to jam with him or just to tip back a beer with him if the opportunity arose.
