Things are slowly returning to normal

Recommended Posts

I can only speak for here in Michigan, since I have not been out of the state at all this year, but Monday, most stores, restaurants, and places to get your hair cut opened back up. The Great Clips by my house had a two to three hour wait every day this week until today to get a haircut, so I had to wait until early this afternoon (Saturday) to finally get a haircut for the first time since January. On Tuesday, the gym I go to opened back up, so I've been working out every day starting Tuesday, and I plan on going there every day this month. Some time next week I need to get a roast beef gyro sandwich at Arby's, a Big Mac and a large Coke at McDonald's, and I'm going to wander around through a large shopping mall, just because it's open again. Now, if this damned virus would just go away and die, I would be so much happier, even though there will not be a live in person Gearfest this year at Sweetwater. And when the big trade shows are allowed to open up to the public again, I can go back to making money again, instead of living off my savings. We'll see what happens.
I rock; therefore, I am.

So far, Michigan's numbers look good. Down the page quite a ways are moving 14 day averages of increase/decrease in number of Covid_19 cases.

https://covidusa.net

Michigan is down -80.35% in number of cases over the last 2 weeks. It will take work from everybody to keep that trend going. Masks in public and avoiding crowded indoor areas are paramount.

Other states are not faring as well, including Washington, where I am living. We were down almost -10% and now we are +16.4%. I see careless people often on the few times I go anywhere.

If Covid_19 was going to go away when the weather got warm, how do we parse Texas +73.5%, Florida +156% or Arizona +124%? Oregon is +210.9%, just south of us on the I-5, that's pretty scary too.

If there are restrictions on restaurants and bars, they will have a tough time staying in business. Peak hours pay for the business, if you can't pack the place out the cost of doing business will bury you. Sadly, that doesn't bode well for gigging musicians - myself and many friends up here. Next Friday we have an outdoor gig at a classy wine bar, last gig was 2 weeks ago and it was frightening even though outdoors. We won't play there again this summer.

Be cautious, be safe, be well!!!!! Cheers, Kuru

Part of the problem here in Texas is people simply not following the guidelines. I don"t want to get too in depth about it, but our sheltering houseguest chooses some of her destinations outside of the house on whether she"ll be forced to wear a mask.

I get it, I don't want to be political. The virus does not care how anybody votes or what they worship. It infects and too often, it kills. It is "invisible" but the results are not invisible.

As of 27 minutes ago, I am 65 years old. On my birthday, we will see over 120,000 Americans have lost their lives to Covid_19, that is a sobering birthday "gift" but it reminds me all the more of how much I love life and how much more life I hope to love living - and live loving.

To say that I do not understand some perspectives is putting it lightly. I wish everybody all the best, life is sweet!! Cheers, Kuru

Some of the debate around masks reminds me of the issue with motorcycle helmets: nobody wears a motorcycle helmet because they intend to crash, you wear it so you have some chance of surviving if you DO crash. If you get home without having crashed, it doesn't mean you shouldn't have worn a helmet.

FWIW, I'd be long dead if not for a full-face motorcycle helmet. I got thrown over the handlebars of my bike, and rode the helmet along a few yards of asphalt. When I got up and took the helmet off to look at it, the entire chin section had been stripped down to bare metal; that would have been my face and neck. A mask doesn't weigh nearly as much, and it might just keep me alive, so I'm good with it.

@KuruPrionz - Happy birthday, brother!

Case numbers are up here in Los Angeles, even though we dodged the worst of the bullet. So, even as some things loosen up, other restrictions have tightened. As an older person I'm not ready to subject myself to restaurants or stores or any place yet where people are not observing the mask decree. I'm still mixing projects in the studio, unaccompanied by clients, but no recording sessions with players present. Yet.

I'm still haunting my apartment, but more out of a lack of motivation than fear for my health. Things are starting to open back up in KC. I could hit a jam this afternoon, and quite a few nights during the week, and I could stay late for most of them, because I'm only working one day a week. So, no worries about getting up in the morning. But it just doesn't seem worth it when I start thinking about getting ready to go. Sit for an hour or two, get up and do three songs, and sit back down. Did you ever sit in a bar and not drink alcohol, when everybody around you is drinking alcohol? BOOOOR-ing.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Arizona is the hot spot for new cases in the USA. I am sticking to what I think is the safest way to resume my normal life, which is to wear a mask, do social distancing, wash my hands, and keep a bottle of sanitizer in my pocket So far so good.........I don't mind wearing the mask, so that is no problem for me.

Normal for us requires around 10 million people flying in from all over the world. I don't know when that will be safe.

Hawaii is still requiring a 14 day quarantine for anybody arriving from other states, so tourism is dead as a doornail until, apparently, at least August.

I think we are in the new normal already, sad to say. The SARS Virus (Of which the Covid-19 is one of) are kinda resistant to Immunization inoculations. I think the Covid-19 will be around for years until they find a cure for it.

Well I went to our community gym for the first time since late February or early March, when they shut all our community buildings down because of the pandemic. No one else was there today. The only exercise of my normal routing that hurt was the triceps machine. The rest went as normal, the triceps had to work much harder to do my normal weights.

Hopefully they will develop a vaccine soon which will prevent people from having to go to the hospital and prevent deaths. I doubt they will be able to cure the disease as there will be new strains/mutations to deal with and they haven't cured the common cold and flu yet. I hope the new normal does not include having to wear masks and social distancing for the rest of our lives and we can get back to going to movies, ball games, plays, dining out, playing gigs, concerts, etc. Hope everyone is staying safe and we get through this soon.

Far from normal, California's new case numbers were the highest on record yesterday. The current word is basically that we can't even begin to talk about a 2nd wave when the first wave is still going very strongly. It leveled off for a while, never really declining, & now is on the increase again. So, no end in sight.

Currently it is being described more as a forest fire with plenty of fuel than a wave.

It started creeping back up here in Washington state with Oregon, Idaho and Montana all way up in the number of cases. Lots of them will be coming to the coast (here) for a visit this summer.

The Canadian Prime Minister closed the borders to non-essential traffic and I don't blame him at all. They are doing pretty well up there and don't need our "help."

Sorry, friends, but I don't see anything returning to "normal", at all.

Some people may want to behave as if life has just picked back up where we left it, now that it's Summer; I don't see it. Sure, it's felt like a lost Spring, no parties, no weddings, no graduations, no concerts, and for some folks, no work & no paycheck. It's been a strain, doing nothing, or at least, not getting to go about what we came to think of as our daily routine, whatever that may have been, and you can only spend so much of your life in front of the television.

We've seen some improvement in the numbers here in the D.C. area, but as more people go out to newly re-opened malls, and restaurants, and even bloody casinos(!?!?!?), it's only a matter of time before there's another upturn. I view a trip to the grocery store much like a walk through a mine field, so the idea of ever going to a restaurant again? Just forget it. I won't even order carry-out food, from anywhere, period, and I wouldn't set foot inside a shopping mall if there was a prize involved.

At this point, I think it's willful ignorance, if not a form of cruelty to pretend to ourselves that life is ever going to go back to what we were used to. I think of C. S. Lewis' description of Narnia under the White Witch's spell; ". . . always Winter, but never Christmas." If a return to normal life is what we're waiting for, Christmas ain't coming, kids, not this year, or next, or anytime soon.

For fairness' sake, bear in mind that I'm writing this at 2 in the morning, after less than 3 hours of sleep, and I've already had my first pot of coffee for the day. I am beyond exhausted, mentally, physically, and emotionally, so that surely colors my perception.

If places like Japan and Hong Kong are a guide, one of the most effective tools we have at our disposal currently are the masks. Despite all the reasons those places SHOULD have huge infection rates, they don"t. Why? They have a cultural tradition going back decades of wearing masks while sick.

If we took that simple step, the infection rates would drop like a rock over Wile E. Coyote.

Personally, I"ve dined in a restaurant 2-3 times in the past month here in D/FW, partly for reasons beyond my control. HOWEVER, in each case, the establishments in question were serious about social distancing and cleaning up. (Tomorrow, I will likely do the same- it"s haircut day, plus a visit to my allergist, and if I don"t eat while I"m out that long, my medications will do nasty things to me.)

The Rona is a mofo, no question. And the fight against it is more likely to turn into an annual struggle than a one & done vaccination solution. So, like WPS says, 'normal' isn"t really on the radar. But with the vast majority finally agreeing to mask wearing at the very least, we could get very, very close.*

Here in my part of the country the curve is expanding at its fastest rate thus far. In other words, the last 4 months of isolating & giving up work were completely wasted, & accomplished nothing, largely because a whole lot of people are too self absorbed to take this situation seriously & do what doctors tell us we absolutely have to do. Thanks, a**holes.

The same is true up here. We were down to a moving average of +8% new cases and starting with the parties on Memorial Day, we shot up quickly. Currently slowly subsiding but still above +40.

You can go down a bit on this page and see how your state is doing - https://covidusa.net

Change can come quickly, Michigan was doing really well (I forget the numbers) but they are now above +90%.

Idaho did not have a serious problem and they've spiked recently to +394%.

There are many states seeing thse spikes and few seeing a steady decline.

I can't say much about masks except I wear them and everybody should. They have been politicized with tragic results...

Maybe if the medical experts...some of them with a past record of being wrong more often than being right hadn't changed their mind so many times or then suddenly given a free pass to one group of protestors while at the same time saying that a different group of protestors were putting people in danger then people might take them more seriously. Maybe if someone had looked closer the projections made by someone who also was wrong many more times than right then people might take them more seriously. When politics gets involved in medical science I become suspicious of the motives.

But what do I know...I'm just a regular guy with no medical background.

I'm scared about what might happen when we start letting tourist back. We not only have the lowest number of cases, we also have, the more important number, the lowest per population number. I know we need tourist back. I'm not sure this pretesting will protect us from a surge. We need to take a targeted approach, like Europe.

Not to be to political, but this is my first presidential election and I get to chose between getting attack by a shark or hitting head on a rock. I'd settle for a root canal as a third choice.
