Back in December 2000, I got my first 5 string bass. After a few months of nearly exclusive use of it, playing my 4 string bass felt like playing a pencil.

At his week's band rehearsal, I debuted the upright. I played it for half the night. When I switched to my 5 string bass, IT felt like playing a pencil.

But they all feel good. That's what matters.

Now try to play your Kala, and see what that feels like.

For me, it's about what gets the job done. I mostly play my fives because they best suit what I play most of the time -- both in how they sound and how I have to play the material. But sometimes nothing but my four will do.

Back in the 90's, in one band (started as duo, evolved into a sort of band) I could play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and mandolin all in one show. Aside from getting tired of lugging all that gear, my hands & fingers were killing me at the end of the night. While I love paying them all, I want a gig that's relatively stable as to which I'm playing.

Yet here I am shifting again...
