My organ trio, Groove Organism, is doing a livestream gig from Butchers Brew in Sydney, on Thursday 11 June, at 8:30pm Sydney time (that’s 10:30am in the UK and 3:30am in LA). We’ love to have you join us.

Groove Organism is a Sydney based organ trio recreating the spirit of the 1960’s Blue Note era of great Hammond B3 players such as Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Dr Lonnie Smith, Richard “Groove” Holmes and many more

The trio follows the traditional organ trio line up with Matt Russell on guitar, John Tweed on organ and Alex Masso on drums.

We cover a lot of musical ground from jazz standards such as Billie’s Bounce, Round Midnight and My Favourite Things, to Beatles and Stones covers, blues, funk, swing and soul.

Guitarist Matt Russell cut his teeth playing in London’s acid jazz scene in the 1990’s. He moved to Sydney in 2005 and has played with Bonnie Kay & The Bonafides and spots with the Sydney Blues Collective. Matt has got back to his roots and passion for the classic organ trio format with the sounds of Grant Green and John Scofield.

John Tweed hails from Hobart, Tasmania, where he heard a sound he really liked – Jimmy Smith on the Hammond organ. Putting the guitar aside, John switched to piano and organ. This lead to a long musical career playing all over Australia and internationally, with the likes of Rick Price, Max Merritt and the Meteors, Renee Geyer, Shirley Bassey and the legendary Sydney soul singer, Ron Barry, among many other icons of Aussie music. With Groove Organism John has returned to his original inspiration, the organ trio sound of the 50’s and 60’s, combined with blues, jazz and fusion influences. The trio’s repertoire features some of John’s original tunes.

Drummer Alex Masso is best known for his work with The Vampires (ARIA nominated, Australian Music Prize finalists) and Queen Porter Stomp. He has been active in the Sydney jazz scene for 15 years and released over a dozen albums with bands he is involved in. Alex also plays with Kinetic Jazz Orchestra, and Dave de Vries Quartet.
