Venue tried their best. There were rules and announcements. You could remove your masks at your tables but to move around you were supposed to have it on. They had glow tape squares on the floor marked for social distanced dancing but this is the weekend is the first time people have been able to get out. It was a force of nature. Crowd did pretty good while sober. I"m not worried about gigs too much. Home is probably way more dangerous. The women both are in the medical field. My daughter has been in COVID ICU for two weeks. Hospital moved her there from Bariatrics. She gave me some first hand accounts of the patients she is working with. Totally non responsive on ventilators and a ton of drugs. They go in and turn them every three hours I think. They are all in comas. It is scary. My wife is doing COVID screening for all visitors across the street at the medical school. There world been turned on it"s end. I do data analytics. I"ve been working from home since 2016.

Predictable but discouraging nonetheless. I think we all hope to soon be playing to rooms where audiences are at least making their best efforts to be safe. The more people ignore the rules, the less likely any of us will be playing anywhere.

 

The first question is whether the authorities will let it continue. I know in the Bay Area the answer is absolutely not. Venues like that will be shut down. The Counties around the Bay are massively serious about clamping down on this sort of thing.

 

The next question is, if does continue, do we consent to be part of it. That's actually 2 questions in one. The first is whether you can reasonably protect yourself. That's going to be very specific to the logistics and feng shui of the venue. The second question is whether you can sleep at night knowing your are not just part of the problem, but an enabler

I'd guess just about anyone going out to a bar or restaurant is of the mindset that this is no big deal. I know quite a number of people like that. There's enough to pack bars it seems like.

 

The other half of people I know are minimizing risks--they might go out but only to places they have to go, and then they wear masks and bring hand sanitizer etc. I don't see how you are going to go out to a joint and wear a mask. All these people really would LIKE to go out but again it's about reducing risk right now.

What is worrisome is where the people want to get back to is the worst possible place for infecting each other and that's bars and restaurants. Both are places where you have to take off or constantly drop your mask to eat and/or drink. They are places that people tend to start talking louder and louder which as they get loud they expel more moisture molecules into the air. Then all that extra stuff in the air and you have staff and people running around stirring up the air even more. So you get a couple people that don't even know they are infected in the perfect environment to spread the most. I guess this is why the second wave of a pandemic is usually worse than the first.

 

I do miss going out for breakfast and occasionally dinner, but I'm sticking to take out for the foreseeable future.

We did our first post covid gig last night outdoors. Tables were setup 10 feet apart. When we were dropping the first note I noticed hardly anyone was wearing a mask. After two sets people were coming up to the band area hugging each other, I was like huh? By the end of the night you would never have known that covid 19 even existed. The band was rusty, and it showed. The bass player blew his amp up and we generally sounded awful. Everyone came up to the stage when we were breaking down and told us how great we sounded. A successful night.

Next Saturday the duo version of the band is booked for a "Drive-Up Concert in the parking lot of a small tap house well on the outskirts of a small town near Bellingham.

 

I believe it is an "under the radar" experiment of some sort. If all goes well, we'll do 2 sets, get paid, count the tip jar (gloves ON!!!) and go home.

 

I cannot predict what "if all does not go well" could turn into yet. We've played there many times, really nice crowd overall but that was when times were different so we'll see.

 

Both of us are super cautious, if we feel endangered in any way we'll pack up and go. I am hoping it will go well.

I hear ya! No way I'm booking anything indoors or poorly thought out outdoors. The event I mention above is being promoted by a known entity and he is a cautious person who will not wilingly expose the talent to the masses. If we pack and run, he will understand.

 

A cattle prod might be a good investment.

 

We may have a gig later in the summer at the Harley shop south of us. They set up a huge stage, 3' off the ground and a wall of Harleys between us and the crowd. It's not a dance concert, broad daylight and we are a sideshow for people coming to hang out with other Harley riders and maybe buy something new. They pay well and it's well distanced. If it happens, I'm in.

 

Not much else on the horizon this summer. I don't expect much of anything to happen until I have a tested, proven vaccine injected into my system. Cheers, Kuru

One of my favorite TV series is Killing Eve which is about this beautiful female assassin Villanelle and Eve a MI6 agent and they have this strange love hate relationship. One episode this season Villanelle out to do a hit and she's disguised as a clown making balloon animals at a kids party. Kids come up and ask for one and she gives them one. Then this little bratty girl comes up ask for one and gets it then demands a second one. Villanelle get mad leans over and gets in the little girls face and says.... "Life is sh1t, get used to it" and bratty girl runs off. So people wear a mask, keep your distance, get used to it.

My question to all of you who are returning to live gigs, has the venue insisted that you get tested? If not, that is a pretty clear message that they don't give a crap about the safety of their employees, or their customers.

 

Covid-19 can stay airborne on dust particles for up to 13 minutes. It is especially dangerous in places where people are talking loudly.

I find it...uh...a matter of concern, shall we say, that we have now lost more American citizens in the last three months than in the last four wars combined (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq--roughly seventy years, all told) and yet there are people who claim that this is 'no big deal.' And, mind you, the death toll is rising daily; it's not as though this is over. Far from it.

Actually Covid has morphed already and what scientist have said the new strain the effects and number of deaths are the same, what is bad is the new mutation is far more infectious.
