The official 'request a guest' thread

Recommended Posts

The thread title says it all: is the a keys player you'd love to see on The Keyboard Chronicles. Obviously there's no guarantee of securing any guest but we will try our best :)

Our requirements of guests are very simple: they need to either have a Skype account or be happy to be called on a cell phone or landline in a quiet space. All our interviews are audio only so not even pants are compulsory :)

So comment with any suggestions below with three pieces of info:

1. Name of guest

2. A link to their site or publicly available work (no personal details / emails unless via private message)

3. Why you think they'd be a good guest

Looking forward to your suggestions and YES, suggestions can include fellow forum members!

I'm sure you remember that I PMed you some names earlier. Those still hold.

The other day, I remembered one that I'm surprised I forgot Daniel Walker, aka mynameisdanno. He's been with Ann Wilson and Heart for a few years now. He's a great guy and great player, and is touring with a killer rig. Ask him about his solo in Magic Man!

Okay, here we go! A few I can think of off the top of my head, in order of least to most famous/potentially hard to reach.

1. Jon Petronzio

2. www.roadman.us

3. JP is a fine example of an American working musician, spending the last two decades touring in bands he's co-founded (Revision) as well as established national acts (John Brown's Body), performing as a solo singer/songwriter/instrumentalist (Roadman), playing regional club dates, and teaching lessons. Also, he is a monster with the left-hand bass.

1. Craig Brodhead and/or Chris Brouwers of

2. Craig's Facebook, Chris's Facebook

3. Craig's mostly known as a guitarist, and Chris plays the trumpet, but they both split their duties pretty much 50/50 with keyboards in Turkuaz, one of the best, tightest bands working these days. Craig generally plays clavinet and synthesizers; Chris covers B3 duties on the other side of the stage, plus even more synthesizers -- often with his left hand, while his right holds his trumpet up to his face.

1. Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists

2. Jenny's Twitter

3. One of the finest orchestrally-minded, play-to-the-song keyboard players of the last twenty years. Her work on Hammond, piano, accordion, synths, and all sorts of weird instruments with keys to complement Colin Meloy's songwriting is full of personality but also just what the doctor ordered, all the time. Also she was on that one episode of Portlandia as "Sparkle Pony."

As long as we're here, might I suggest some more pie-in-the-sky ones, since you've managed to snag some pretty high-profile guests?

Benmont Tench, Page McConnell, John Medeski.

I wasn't really asking your permission, I guess...

A further update: there are some guests coming up that have come directly from your suggestions. There's also a major one from my own bucket list that I don't want to disclose until I've got the recording in the can :)

Hey David, congratulations on the new home!

Although I think we’ve discussed him briefly some time ago, someone I’d love to hear on the podcast is Guy Fletcher

Cheers!

Hiya! Indeed, he's definitely on my little spreadsheet as someone to approach. Talking to Alan Clark was brilliant so I can imagine Guy would be just as entertaining ;)

Steve Porcaro -- To most of us on KC he's pretty legendary.  Looks like facebook is primary contact -- https://www.facebook.com/steveporcaromusic/

Eddie Jobson -- Zappa, UK.  Master of the CS80, Synclavier, etc.  Finding no current web presence except for a facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/EJ.UK.fanpage.  There is also a site, https://zealotslounge.com/.  But it requires membership.  Probably a hard get.

Mitchel Forman -- On some pretty influential fusion records in the 80s.  Monster talent on piano and synths.  Googling reveals no web presence for him so maybe not easy to track down.  Made a big splash on the NY scene but has been in the LA area for a long time.

Dave Stewart  -- The one who played with Bruford and former Keyboard magazine columnist.  -- https://www.davebarb.com

Jim Beard -- Great jazz/fusion keyboardist.  Long association with Mike Stern and many others. -- http://www.jimbeard.com

Alan Pasqua -- Another great jazz player.  Tony Williams, Allan Holdsworth  -- https://alanpasqua.com

Tom Brislin -- Another former Keyboard magazine columnist.  I enjoyed his records under the Spiraling name.  Currently touring with Kansas and has an incredible professional resume of touring with big name acts.  -- https://tombrislin.com

Steve Hunt  -- Another fusion guy who toured with Holdsworth for many years -- http://stevehuntjazzpiano.com   No contact info on his web.

Tom Schuman -- The guy from Spyrogyra.  Great player with a long history of synth work as well as piano and rhodes.  -- http://www.tomschuman.de/us-start.html

Joey Calderazzo -- Jazz pianist with longtime association with Branford Marsalis.  I first saw his playing with Wayne Shorter, late 80s when he went back to acoustic jazz. -- https://www.joeycalderazzo.com

David Rosenthal -- Long time MD/Keys for Billy Joel.  Recent interview in Rolling Stone - https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/keyboardist-david-rosenthal-interview-billy-joel-rainbow-steve-vai-1154018/.   -- https://www.davidrosenthal.com

@Mills Dude  Some great suggestions there! And just FYI - two of them we've done ;) (Mr Porcaro, Mr Brislin)

Again - thanks!

Dude, I'm sorry.  I though I scanned the list on this board to double check.   I need to listen to those.

Here's another suggestion -- Larry Fast.  I absorbed his Synergy Records when I was in college mid 80's.  Collaborated extensively with Peter Gabriel.  He's certainly a synth legend.  Google finds a website for him, http://synergy-emusic.com, but it gives a 500 error.  Seems to have a facebook presence at https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Musician-band/Larry-FastSynergy-94530608886/

Hey Dave/Paul.. I know Dave Cohen recommended this guy.  He's is definitely on fire as a Nashville Session cat and I really like his sensibilities.  Here's his website.  I'll email you his address.

How about Geoff Downes of Asia? I’d kinda like to see him as a guest on the keyboard corner and ask him if he still has that prophet 5 he used on all their early albums.
