Gig Postponements/Cancellations Due to Covid-19

Recommended Posts

Well, I have my first cancellation - a St Patrick's Day gig with an Irish band called Bedlam Boys. The mandolin player (also guitar player for the 'tones) is self-quarantined after having contact with someone who is now in hospital with C-19. Don't know the status of the 'tones end-of-month gig - it will depend on the health of him and our drummer who is also in hospital with pneumonia. One of our other friends is also in with C-19 and he's the healthiest guy I know.

Any adverse effect on anyone else's upcoming shows?

Play. Just play.

All gigs coming to a screeching halt around here considering St. Louis City and County have prohibited gatherings of over 50 people and IL is closing all restaurants and bars. I see a lot of the local bands posting on Facebook that they are available for house parties with less than 50 people....gotta do something.

Likewise in the CT, gatherings are limited in size and most venues are closing for the near future. Restaurants are closed for dining in (take-out still okay) and all movie theaters closed as of 8 p.m. tonight.

Yeah, since the original post, NJ has also done the bar/restaurant thing plus the <50 person thing and a 'please stay off the streets between 8pm-5am' thing. I know a lot of bars that will have an abundance of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes left over after today. That's a crime against humanity.

Yep; I lost $170 worth of ballet tickets (as bad off as I am, the young ballet dancers have it worse, so I chose "donation" vs. "apply to next season's tickets), when the entire season was canceled after the first two shows, and have lost a dozen or more gigs of my own (all of the ones already booked and confirmed), along with any rehearsals or recording sessions or jams.

The story is the same for just about everyone. I guess we'll all do best to learn new tools for accompanied practice via the computer. But I'm getting really angry at pundits who are welcoming a new "permanent reality": where the computer is the only way we do just about anything in our lives; no more human interactions in person EVER. Certain people profit from that.

... and a 'please stay off the streets between 8pm-5am' thing...

Yeah, the "please" is just a courtesy. They called out the National Guard to enforce the curfew. Jersey ain't messin' around.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yeah, I see all these people posting their wonderful crafts and home improvements and live-streamed music and "challenge" videos in their "quarantine down time"... and I'm still working (often longer than I normally would). I get a little time to play; but no more than I normally do. Especially with 4 of us home now. Most of my music time is spent on the upright, since it's right there in the open. Or grabbing my beater bass (Fernandes Tremor) next to the computer for a quick stress release. But the idea of learning a bunch of new songs, or writing some, or cleaning up the music room - trumped by "real" work.

Even the idea of watching these streamed house shows- there's just too many of them going on to choose from; and still real-life work & chores to do. I appreciate that these artists need to work and make something. And I've supported a few. But just like I don't go to shows every night under normal conditions, I can't watch & tip all of these, either.

If there is only one positive out of all of this, it's that I'm no longer allowed to foist my "playing" upon an unsuspecting public.
