Stimulus - wow

Recommended Posts

I'm going to diversify, with $100 allocated for a fresh backup HD and some fringe Soundfonts. Then I will allow myself no more than 2 minutes of cursing, because I'm going to spend the rest responsibly. I'd like to spend it on a Wavestate, but at present, I prefer a small list of "goods" over just one big Good.

I remember when Reagan did his stimulus of a couple hundred dollars with inflation probably about the same amount. People got the money bought some groceries and maybe something for the family and then it was okay we're back in the same boat again. I would of rather seen this money used to buy masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, ventilators, and other items to fight the virus.

I don't recall a Reagan stim check/measure

There was a 1981 tax cut.

Bush II did a stimulus in 2008:

individuals would receive up to $600.

Married couples would get up to $1,200.

Ours went straight to our tax bill. Never saw a penny of it.

Thanks for the correction, Bush did it. I just remember it sounded good but reality was oh nice then poof gone.

I also think our economy and the circumstances will require another stimulus to consumers.

Assuming those who E-Filed 2019 already get checks first, followed by those who E-Filed 2018, and so on? I got really far behind on my tax filings and only recently finally completed 2016, 2017, and 2018 all at once. Haven't touched 2019 yet. If they go on my 2018 income I probably won't get anything even though my 2019 income would qualify me, and I'm certainly much worse of than that in the current climate, but it is what it is. Doesn't really accommodate those of us who have base + commission/bonus. The current climate of everything shut down wipes out my variable pay which is about 25-33%. But past tax returns wouldn't represent that because this wasn't happening in those years. At least I still have a job and some portion of my income still coming in.

Since I haven't driven my car in the last month and will probably have no need to drive for at least a couple more months I raised my car insurance deductibles to the max and dropped or reduced other coverage which knocked close to $200 off my current premium bill.

Just because I just went thru this in the middle of this virus thing, be sure to put your car battery on a trickle charger or drive enough to keep the battery charged. I went to get groceries earlier this week and after all the hassle of the store I come out and my car wouldn't start. The battery was about five years old and wouldn't hold a charge anymore. I called AAA battery service and they come check everything out confirm I need a battery, but then discover they don't have anymore of my type battery and not sure when their next load of batteries will arrive. So they gave me a jump and I drove to the Honda dealer and got a battery. Not a good time to have a car that won't start.

I did similar and took the comprehensive coverage off my car. That and I'm rationing my wife's water and electric power usage. I can't have her using up resources just because she's home all day.

April Fools!

The o/p is from April 2

Unless the original poster has permission to change the calendar.

Or lost track of what day it was.

I can guess which but there are other ways to seek humor.

I tried the same thing with my car insurance, as the rates went up by 25% even though this is the six-month mid-term of my annual policy (it's never been raised more than annually) and I pay all at once. The most I could get it down was maybe $25, so even though I'm driving even less than before (maybe 20 miles a month instead of 100 miles or so), I'm kind of screwed due to living adjacent the most dangerous interstate intersection in the country (even though I never use it). And because it's California.

No unemployment checks yet; they're way behind. I can last a few months, but no more than that. If I'm lucky, the quarantine ends no later than August and hopefully as early as mid-May, I'll get my old job back (no guarantees there, as companies won't necessarily throw the switch all the way on right away), and will owe less in taxes next year. :-) I've been afraid to start this year's tax forms yet as I don't know what I'll do if I owe money. But I can't live in denial forever. Maybe I'll start working on them this coming Monday.

In spite of all this complaining, I'm probably in better shape than most, because I so aggressively save for a rainy day. It's just that I was expecting a cushion beyond that, and was shocked when I didn't get one. But I'm not at liberty to talk about it. I just hope other people here aren't in the same boat. Maybe we'll see deflation though, and thus living expenses will go down to partially compensate for economic losses.

I saw someone post on FB that they went out and his battery died. He made a good point that we need to keep an eye on such things since we're all not driving as often.

I had been attempting to get registered for Florida's unemployment benefits since last Wednesday. Multiple attempts, clearing cookies, four PIN resets, much frustration. The web site was slammed and I kept getting resets. Today however, I woke up at 4 AM and successfully registered. It went comparatively quickly (only one reset).

The forms on that site need some more testing by naive users, but the main problem was the overload.

I"m buying flights and rent a cars for 2 years of travel.

Usually costs 5-6,000.

Hell we rented new cars for the last month @ 4 bucks a day M-Thurs, 11 on weekends.

We wanted a new car but the idea a 10 minute test drive is enough to make a decision never sat well with me.

We"ve driven a Hyundai, 2 x Nissans and the new a Jeep.

Love those 6 cylinder 32mpg Hyundai Sonata Sedans.

So quiet when the doors shut, great stock stereo, the extras are plentiful too.

We"ll see.

But buy your DisneyWorld vacations, and other flights w/ rent a cars now.

Prices cannot change.

They really need the money...
