ProfD
Several times I've read that it's hard to hear/demo KBs in the noisy environment that is NAMM. The question that comes to my mind is whether or not personal headphones are prohibited. I usually take my own cans to the music store just because the monitor situation can be hit or miss. elsongs
Several times I've read that it's hard to hear/demo KBs in the noisy environment that is NAMM. The question that comes to my mind is whether or not personal headphones are prohibited. I usually take my own cans to the music store just because the monitor situation can be hit or miss. I missed NAMM this year, but pretty much every year I've been to, 90% of all the keyboards on display have headphones connected to them. I used to try to do a vlog of the show years ago, but it was nearly impossible since most of the keyboards are only heard via headphones. Dr Mike Metlay
There's nothing prohibiting you from having your own cans on the show floor, as long as you can prove they're yours. With the bass-ackwards security they have now, they check your bag for bombs going in, but don't check it for stolen gear coming out, so you should be fine... While the vast majority will have booth headphones on each device, the fact remains that these are often substandard. If a firm also makes or distributes headphones, they'll use them at the demo stations, even if said headphones aren't much good for isolation. I never go anywhere without my IEMs, which have an adapter for 1/4" so I can use them anywhere I don't trust the local cans. The case fits in a pocket and goes with me with no hassle. I rarely need them at NAMM, but I am glad I have them... and security understands they're mine, because they're custom fitted and have my initials on them. mike Quote Dr. Mike Metlay (PhD in nuclear physics, golly gosh) Musician, Author, Editor, Educator, Impresario, Online Radio Guy, Cut-Rate Polymath, and Kindly Pedant Editor-in-Chief, Bjooks ~ Author of SYNTH GEMS 1 clicky!: more about me ~ my radio station (and my fam) ~ my local tribe ~ my day job ~ my book ~ my music
ProfD
Thanks fellas. I plan to be at NAMM next year. Great to know cans are provided and bringing my own isn't prohibited. Sam CA
I take my headphones with me all the time. I've seen many others with their own cans as well. I don't even know if there's an official policy for this. So far no one has stopped me for the past 20 WINTER NAMMs. Security is a joke over there but who could blame them. Josh Paxton
I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I'm kind of amazed that anyone who has ever been to NAMM more than zero times and/or read the online reports would even dream of showing up without their own headphones. I think I would sooner neglect to wear pants than show up without phones.
The Real MC
I reserved my audition time on the Thursday and Sunday of the show. Friday and Saturday are too noisy. Saturday is especially bad due to the large crowds. The last time I was at NAMM I skipped Saturday and spent the day with friends.
ProfD
Like I said, I'm done. Been there, done that 34 times. What's the point of going anymore, unless you're working there. Fair enough. When I roll out there hopefully we'll be able to meet up for lunch. Quote PD "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."--E. Doerfler
I left Sunday around 4:00PM. From 2:00PM on it was the quietest of the 4 days, for sure.
