I don't know if this counts, but I've loved the soundtrack to Hal Hartley's "No Such Thing" since first hearing it. He did all the music himself. It's a huge part of the movie for me, and maybe why I'm the only person I've ever known who likes that movie.

I really like the soundtrack for the remake of Solaris, by Cliff Martinez.

Since we are reviving this thread, I recently watched The Foreigner on Netflix (starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan both in very atypical roles) and I was taken by the synth-heavy soundtrack. This was also done by Cliff Martinez, not bad for a former (RHCP) drummer. Oh, and I guess Jackie Chan sang the song over the closing credits, never knew he had opera training!

Yeh Philip Glass' early scores, Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Mishima.

Also love Michael Nyman's work for Peter Greenaway, but he came to worldwide attention for his score for The Piano. The grind he gets going towards the end of this makes me smile.

You can hear Glass' influence all over TV and contemporary movie scores, though few of them have the edginess of Glass' early theatre works.
