MAJUSCULE
Been playing a new Soul Brunch gig recently and one of the tunes is How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You). Obviously I knew the tune and all, but I didn't realize how killing the piano part is on it. My little research indicates it was probably Joe Hunter on piano (and likely MD as well). So relaxed and effortless but always in the pocket, filling behind the vocal. Really nice build throughout the tune and then a perfect four-bar solo. Any other standout tracks I've been missing? Or am I wrong about this and it's someone else (Earl Van Dyke maybe)? [video:youtube] Quote Eric Website Gear page
mate stubb
Good question. Earl and Joe were both around in '64 when the songs were written, with Joe leaving the Funk Brothers shortly after. It could have been either, but from what I have heard of both men's style it sounds more like Joe to me. Quote Moe ---
Outkaster
Also realize the chords are slightly different the way James Taylor plays i. Quote "Danny, ci manchi a tutti. MAJUSCULE
Yeah, it was recorded in '64, which is why I was wondering about overlap. The combination of touch and feel is what really blows me away. I have a hard time making one of those licks feel like him, never mind the whole song. Joe Muscara
Been playing a new Soul Brunch gig recently and one of the tunes is How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You). Obviously I knew the tune and all, but I didn't realize how killing the piano part is on it. On tracks from this era/band like this one, I have a hard time paying attention to more than the bass line. Damn! I'll try to pay attention to the piano and organ parts, I promise. MAJUSCULE
I mean, it's totally understandable, the mixes are mostly vocals, drums, and bass. It's also a lesson in range considering the instrumentation and the mixes. The fills pop a lot more in a higher octave. He goes up an octave in the second verse here when he gets a little busier.
