OT: Going off the grid.

Having solar put in today. My grandfather and my boyfriend's father are installing it. We're getting the battery backup kind, so completely off the grid. We could have got by with a 10,800 watt system but for about $600. More we went with a 14,400 watt system. It should pay for itself in less than 4 years.

Wish it were more viable where I live. I did one of those online calculators and even with subsidies, it would cost more over its lifetime. We don't get enough ours of sunlight but with the extreme temperatures need more energy for heating and cooling. Works great in the Western US thoug - I know folks in the Denver area that are actually putting more into the grid than they use.
