First heard him back as part of BS&T in the 70’s and got to see him in the 80’s as part of Carla Bley’s Sextet. His piano solo on her song, “Lawns” is absolute poetry. RIP Mr. Willis. 🙁

Yes, I knew him best for his work with Carla Bley. RIP. A gentle giant of jazz piano.
