timwat
Trying to help a friend out. He posted this on FB: Link to Box - mp3 of unknown tune He describes as "...recorded on my cassette recorder one early sleepy morning in 1977 off of WIBA-FM Madison WI." He's run it through Shazam and Soundhound, no results. Anyone help with this? Quote ..
CountFosco
That's gorgeous. Great recording too, evident even through my laptop speakers. Going to give that a proper listen later.
Threadslayer
Sounds pretty good for a 40+ year old cassette recording of a radio. Mark Zeger
Maybe Bob Brookmeyer by way of Dave Ferris" suggestion of the Thad/Mel band? Eastman"s Dave Rivello is a Brookmeyer expert. I could send him the link.
Dr Mike Metlay
I think it's a music cue from a TV show or movie of the era. I'm going to go bananas trying to figure out what it is, now... Brad Kaenel
I emailed Bob Curnow -- if anyone can ID it, he can. Might even be one of his; colors on the recording are very close to the Kenton and Herman albums of the late '70s. Piano solo doesn't sound like Stan to me, though. cedar
I also thought it sounded a bit like a Gil Evans arrangement. I can imagine it as a Brookmeyer arrangement too, but that is definitely not the Mel/Thad band.
Brad Kaenel
Bob Curnow replies: "Brad, This is a Les Hooper composition. I think it"s on an album called Dorian Blue, which also may be the title of the piece. We publish most of Les"s music[*], but not this one because of all the w.w. doubles. Great piece, though." *Bob has a fantastic big band catalog at sierramusic.com -- and he actually *does* have the chart!
