Tom Williams
For years my sleep aid of choice was diphenhydramine -- and it still ranks as my "desert island" medicine due to its versatility.(1) More recently I switched to (mostly) doxylamine. Neither seems to addict me. J_tour
Yeah, I also have been using diphenhydramine (Benadryl is the main brand name in the US, but it's inexpensive in generic or store brands for years). Amazingly, I haven't developed a tolerance for it after quite a few years, and, while it makes me a bit groggy in the morning, it's nothing a few cups of coffee can't fix. Doesn't seem to affect the quality of my sleep, in the way that, for example, alcohol does. Well, all I can say is that I have normal dreams and get in my eight hours most nights. Although, I do find there's a relatively short "window" when the drug is effective: if you miss it by more than a few minutes, you're sort of back where you started. I suppose I could be psychologically dependent on it, just from being in the routine of "Well, I need sleep, so time for Benadryl, wait about an hour and half, and try not to fall asleep at my desk." It's been very effective for me, and I really can't do without sleep, so it doesn't bother me philosophically taking a pill to stack the odds in my favor.
