NPD: Malekko Scrutator

Recommended Posts

I'd been looking for one of these, found a nearly new used one for $100 at a nearby GC, and grabbed it while I could. Really, I picked it up yesterday in the morning, but went right out to do my gardening work instead of staying home with my new toy, so I didn't even plug it in until today.

I think it sounds beautiful, in a blown-tube, Ring-Mod-On-PCP sort of way. You can "tune" it much like a Ring Mod with the (Sample) Rate knob, and adjust the tone with the Filter & Q knobs. Reducing the Bit Rate adds grinding Digital glitch noise, but the whole thing cleans up as soon as my signal cuts off; there's no noise floor with my HB's.

It does just what I wanted, and a little more, especially hooked up to an EV-5 Expression pedal. Add a bit of Modulation & Delay, and it's beyond weird.

Andy from ProGuitar Shop (now with Reverb) does the best video demo that I've seen, but he also has an Expression pedal (which you don't see on-screen) hooked up for much of the video.

Waiting on a second power brick, so I can wire up everything at once, but for now, this is doubleplusgood.

Might I suggest a bit ;) of both in a good tape-flavored delay with heavy Wow & Flutter and "Crinkley" virtual wrinkle, splice and mechanical-deficiency artifacts, such as a Strymon El Capistan (have and love!) or Volante (want and lust for!) dialed-in just-sew... ? Fed into a heavily modulated, vapory reverb such as that of the Strymon Flint's " '80s Rack/Hall" reverb?

Start that whole mess with a Foxrox Octron (bless its "Direct" blend as well as octave fuzzes Up AND Down!) placed just after the Scrutator, maybe followed by either a flanger such as the classic MXR M-117 with Width set to zero, Manual honed-in to your personal un-swept Goldilocks-Zone at that time and space; or, speaking of zero, a tape-style "through zero" flange; or, maybe... even... both... ?

THREE kinds of music, eat that and hat, Bob's Country Bunker!

Is this the demo-video of which you squeak? I especially like the sounds he particularly accelerates into our cause-and-effects chain as from the LHC on LSD via a Telecaster clone at about 0:49, tweezy and ringingly moddedly:

Thanks, everyone! It's a very strange toy, which goes with my other very strange toys.

@Caevan - That's the video, indeed. One thing with all of these crazy new DSP-based Malekko pedals (Scrutator, Charlie Foxtrot & Sneak Attack) is that they all have CV/Exp In jacks, so of course, you can do insane things with an EV-5 plugged in. I'm looking to expand my pedalboard footprint considerably, just to accommodate a pack of EV-5's.

I have so many freaking pedals that could take expression pedals that it would probably double my pedalboard size*.

But in writing that sentence, I had this thought: what if I creatively wired up an expression pedal to control several effects simultaneously? Sure, by doing so, I give up discrete control, but OTOH, sonic chaos could reign supreme!

* if I had an actual pedalboard.

Indeed. On all counts, brave Esquire.

Now, I thought that I was rather clever, and rather pleased with myself, when I figured out that I could connect one "Tap-Favorite Switch" to both my Strymon El Capistan and Strymon Flint with a three-ended 1/4" TRS cable and switch them simultaneously to favorite presets of my own making. Came in handy when I was in an occasionally gigging band. I seemed a mad wizard with my array of pedalry, I did... ;)

I've rarely used 'expression pedals', but when I have, I really enjoyed them and got incredible results...

Now I just need one or more expression pedals, a crap-ton of cables, splitters and switchers, and a whole lotta patience.

...probably a 15x15 space for all the pedals & cables, too.

@Dannyalcatraz - If you want a Pedalboard, scan GC's Used Gear listings. Just ridiculous - see PM.

Cast-off computer desk, file cabinet or small dresser is your friend for storing pedals. Keep your pedals in drawers, neatly laid out, with a drawer for accessories (tuner, capo, slides), maybe another for small splitter boxes, AC adapters, you get the idea. I find cast-off computer desks and office furniture often enough that I've never had to buy any for my Music Room, and I don't bring home beat-down junk, either. It's amazing what people throw away.

I hang my cables on the coat rack rail in the closet, and stash bulky stuff, like spare Amps, in there, too. Any piece of gear large enough to need its own gig bag or HSC has one; makes it easier to stack or store gear that's securely packed. Anything that's not in active use is in the case, or drawer. I keep a real toolbox for parts and Guitar tools, separate from household tools.

FWIW, my Music Room is about 12x16.

I wish I had a music room. I generally play perched on the edge of my bed, or- with one of my portable digital modelers- wandering around my backyard (+ dogs) or my Church"s halls or courtyard.

Not only do I have far more gear than I need, I have more that"s I can reasonably manage & store.

...not that a little detail like THAT is going to slow me down!

Ah, brother, I couldn't function without my Music room, in part because I don't know where all this stuff would live, otherwise. However, I'm still working on the principle that as I acquire new gear that I need - or tell myself that I need, as you well understand - there's probably something else I'm not really using, which could be turned into $$$ or something else useful.

I was saying this to another friend recently - There's some gear I hang onto for a long time, because I know that I use it, even if only every so often, while there's other gear that hangs around for a long time, before I decide that it's not getting enough use to justify the space it takes up: differentiating between the two is the real issue.

You"re a practicing musician.

Me? I"m a dabbler. I mean, my REAL musical talent is in singing*. I just happen to love guitars.

* well, that"s the one that I put effort into. I have a gift for playing stringed Instruments, but I lack the discipline to fully realize my potential.**

** which gives me an excuse for catering to my introversion.
