I admit it, the ad did say "rattling noise." It also said "working condition" and "works with no known issues."

Turns out the rattling sound was the capsule, hanging by its wires.

Sorry for the soft focus; I think the camera was also stunned by the "minor cosmetic wear" on this unit, and was shaking in sympathy.

Can you fix it?

I bought this to modify, so I really only needed the chassis and the lower half of the mic body. Refurbishing trashed mics is a sort of hobby of mine. Here's a before-and-after of a mic I did a couple years ago:

Regardless of my plans for this mic, I remain surprised by the seller's claim that the mic has "no known issues." If someone planned to use it as-is, s/he'd have been pretty disappointed.

And people ask me why I'm so hesitant about buying music gear, particularly synthesizers, on Ebay....

I had a similar issue with an MXL Genesis SE microphone. It was sold as non-working with a rattle. The microphone was in like-new condition with no scratches, dents or marks of any kind. When I opened it up I found that the saddle and capsule had broken off of the mounting post, and the capsule was totally trashed. I'm not quite sure how you could subject the mic to that much force without any external damage. I replace the capsule with a better one removed from a Studio Projects C3 which had been replaced by an RK47 and all was well.

I think you should have expected that issue after all it is used or second hand, maybe third.

I was thrown off by the seller's claim that "it works with no known issues."

Here is a funny postscript. The auction says that the mic comes with a storage bag. That much was true. Here it is:

I'm not sure, do you think the mic will fit inside?

grin

A reason why I collect old keyboards is that I feel partly responsible for doing it, responsible for preserving history and being a custodian for these things
Plus, old gear has a story. I like that.
