Are serious Songwriters Extroverted/Introverted ?

Recommended Posts

I think who you are directly relates to your original compositions.

I like to dig further, take a step back to what drives the individual song writers process.

Creativity is the obvious driving force. But what about our tendencies ?

for example, if you have extroverted tendencies [ or introverted ] I believe that

impacts your song writing process.

Some might say it depends on the day or the weather or the mood or the girl friend.

My thought is that its not actually situational or chance.

The creative song writing process is centered on internal qualities, as we perceive and absorb whats around us.

I also believe the creative process is widely misunderstood. That might be another topic.

Why fit in, when you were born to stand out ?

Socially I'm an introvert but musically I'm an extrovert. I can see the value in both.

An extrovert getting out in the world can channel their experiences into song.

An introvert may feel more creative being isolated from the world. Someone who reads a lot can channel those literary experiences into song. When working on a song in the studio I prefer to be alone, but there are times when an ensemble with other musicians in the same room is the only way to get the vibe I am after.

I am an extrovert convert. I absorb different topics and match it musically. Creative output to me is like a river.

In 1/1 discussion with acquaintances, about my personal process, some think it's weird.

I am used to reactions.

I can think of a discussion where someone claimed that's all bull sh*&. I attribute that to 'everyone has an opinion '.

While creativity has much variation, actual [ serious/consistent/long term] creators are a small % of the population.

Anyway, when working on a new song, I don't like distractions- unless I ask for it.

I get zoned in on finishing. That requires some isolation IMO. But its

not introversion.

I like opinions/feedback. I have a 'jury ' of 4 that

I trust , have preferences, but are open minded. If they do not like

a song draft [ 80-90% complete] I will archive that song 'experiment '.
