Hmmm. That "attachment" isn't working.

dB, is this in California?

A reason why I collect old keyboards is that I feel partly responsible for doing it, responsible for preserving history and being a custodian for these things
Plus, old gear has a story. I like that.

Hey y'all - That's The Lathe Room and it's here in the Hollywood Hills. A vintage restored Scully 601 disk mastering lathe with Westrex cutting heads and electronics and an analog cutting chain with equipment from Maselec, EAR, GOLY, and Inward Connections.

We just did a photo shoot for an article that will run in the September issue of Recording Magazine

Here's a sneak peak of the room:

Steph - how many cutting rooms like that are in the LA area? Are brand new disk mastering lathes even being made these days?

Can you get more specific about the components of the cutting chain?

(2) Maselec MEA-2's for A/B program EQ's.
EAR 825Q tube EQ
Maselec MLA-2 Compressor
Maselec MDS-2 High-Frequency Limiter
Custom LP/HP filter set from GOLY (not pictured)
Custom console and elliptical filters by Inward Connections

For digital cutting the DAW is Pyramix, AD-DA is handled via RME ADI-2 Pro FS and monitoring is through powered DynAudio LYD 48's. Acoustics by GIK

The cutting system itself consists of some heavily modified Westrex amplifiers with Westrex 3D-II (Stereo) and 2B (Mono) cutter heads. All the heads and electronics were overhauled by Len and Jacob Horowitz at The History Of Recorded Sound in late 2018.

Wow...so much Maselec. cool

How/where in the chain does the tube EQ fit in? Does it always get used?

I know nothing about the GOLY piece at all.

I use tube EQ for it's flavor in my mastering room and I wanted to be able to replicate my chain in the lathe room for cutting. the GOLY piece is a custom piece from Gustav. High-pass and low pass filters with some pretty steep curves.
