John Lee
Apologies for the very specific question but Im looking for a module to sit on my Crumar Mojo 61 that a) has a half decent vibraphone sound and b) eight program change buttons that will allow me to change sounds quickly on the Mojo 61 during songs (for example Wurli on the verses, organ on the choruses). In terms of modern gear I think the main options are a Reface DX or a Roland D05 but I wanted to check whether the collective wisdom of the forum knew if there are any other options I might be missing? Im not adverse to getting something from the 80s or 90s if it fits the bill and does the job. Thanks very much John Quote Nord Electro 6D 61, Wurlitzer EP200A, Neo Mini Vent, EV ZLX12P, QSC CP8. stoken6
You're asking for 8 user-programmable "favo(u)rites" buttons, like on the Korg SV1, if I understand correctly? I'm not a module specialist, but would you accept a two-box solution? A half-rack module and a program-change-sender? Perhaps a tablet or smartphone with some MIDI software on it - I forget the name but there are programs that enable you to define your own custom MIDI controllers. J. Dan
Just a side note: The 2 examples you gave have keyboards. Normally I would consider a "module" to not have a keyboard, though could be tabletop or rack mount. So just to clarify, do you want to be able to play the vibraphone sounds on the device, or trigger them from the Mojo? If you want to trigger from the Mojo, there are phone and iPad apps that could handle the sounds, as well as some setlist programs that could send changes to the Mojo with a press of a pad. John Lee
Thanks for the reply Mike. I have used S1MidiTrigger on an iPad to do the program changes but I do prefer hardware. And I was thinking if a module can do the vibraphone sound and the program changes then it would be less stuff to take to a gig and set up. The program changes dont necessarily need to be user programmable because the first eight midi program change numbers will change the eight sounds on the Mojo 61 (4 organs and 4 pianos). RedKey
Something else to consider as a partial solution: I picked up a 2nd hand Arturia BeatStep to control the Mojo61 for around $75US. Single USB cable to the Mojo61 supplies power to the BestStep and controls the Mojo61. Gives me: Full programability to have a single button per sound to instantly call it up and switch between. Additional FX control. Instant Clav pickup and damper control. You'd still need a module or mobile device for the Vibraphone, but now your list is full of options. John Lee
Thanks Dan. Yup Im looking to trigger the vibraphone sound from the Mojo. Youre right, the Reface DX does have a keyboard but the keyboard for the D05 is optional so if I went that route I would use the module only. I have thought about the iPad route but would really prefer hardware - its just a personal preference really. J. Dan
Have you given thought about how you're going to control whether or not sound is coming from each of the two? i.e. playing piano/organ on the Mojo WITHOUT triggering sounds on the module, or vice versa? Only reason why I bring this up is because if you haven't thought it all the way through, it may turn out that it would work out better to have a box that upon a button press could send all of the appropriate messages to BOTH devices (mojo and whatever you use for vibraphone) setting both patch changes and maybe volume changes (at least mute/unmute) or possibly allowing for layering, if that's what you want. If you HAVE thought it out and have something in mind, that could help us make recommendations for the module. John Lee
Thanks Redkey, I wasnt aware of the Beatstep, looks like an interesting option, ill check it out. John Lee
Dan, my plan was to basically have 7 blank presets on the module and just one that was the vibraphone sound that also triggers a blank sound on the Mojo 61 (one of the combo organs with all the drawbars pushed in). Hope that makes sense. Cheers John Quote Nord Electro 6D 61, Wurlitzer EP200A, Neo Mini Vent, EV ZLX12P, QSC CP8.
J. Dan
Yes, perfect sense....almost exactly how I was thinking I would do it. Since you said 8 patches I thought that was 8 on the mojo and was wondering about the vibraphone. So you know the first 7 will have to be silent on the module, right? So the module will have to have the ability to save silent patches for 1-7 and have 8 be vibraphone. Correct? John Lee
Yes Dan that is correct. I only use VB3 on the Mojo 61 so any of the other organ sounds can be used as a silent patch and the only patch of the 8 I would need to sound on the module is the vibraphone.
