analogman1
Hi Folks, I'm considering getting a new iPad Pro to be able to run a few of the Moog soft synths live (Model D, Model 15 and Animoog). From what I can gather, Apple has eliminated the headphone jack. Other than buying an expenisve audio interface, and dealing with setting it up on stage etc., is there an easy alternative to replicating a good old fashioned headphone jack? Thanks in advance! Groove On
You can run MIDI and 3.5mm audio together using a powered USB-C hub. Some USB-C hubs have a built-in 3.5mm and other ports so no need for additional adapters, but no guarantees on the quality of the DAC. USB-C is very promising but its so early in the game that audio manufacturers havent really caught up yet with solutions for the newest iPad Pros. Im hoping Korg updates the PlugKey to USB-C. In the long run it should all be simpler, but were not there yet. This article covers some of the issues with audio and a USB-C Hub: https://www.cultofmac.com/599810/two-months-with-ipad-pro-usb-c/amp/ (it may send you running to find a good old audio interface)
jeffincltnc
Korg Plug Key is a better solution for MIDI in and L/R 1/4" out. Moonglow
Havent tried other options, but have had good results with the Korg PlugKey, as well. Groove On
The Korg PlugKey uses a lightning connector. The New iPad Pros ditched the lightning port for USB-C, so they need an adapter to work with the PlugKey.
drawback
Presonus Studio 24c is more expensive at $149 but it looks like a small footprint interface. Quote ____________________________________ Rod Here for the gear.
analogman1
Great suggestions, didn't realize how relatively inexpensive these interfaces are... Quote Tom Nord Electro 5D, Modal Cobalt 8, Yamaha upright piano, numerous plug-ins...
drawback
You should find the Presonus has lower latency than the PlugKey. Ive noticed higher sonic quality and faster response with my iConnectAudio4+ using Mojo61 as a controller. No side-by-side, but it feels and sounds better. RandyFF
Presonus Studio 24c is more expensive at $149 but it looks like a small footprint interface. So to be clear about the differences between the Korg PlugKey and the Presonus Studio 24c: - the 24c has: : USB C and USB A 2.0 port for computer connection, so with the right cable you can hook up to iPad lightning : 2 mic/line inputs with volume control and metering, as well as phantom power So the 24c is a proper interface that can get you 2 inputs into your computer/iPad, but how do you control the volume coming from music apps to the outputs of the 24c? And is it bus powered?
