Multi FX for Vintage Keys

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get a D-6 or E-7 Clav. Would love to add it to my vintage keys collection. Thinking I'll gig with it in a new jam band that I'm playing with these days. I use two K8.2's and a small Mackie 8 ch mixer already with my clonewheel and PC3-K8. I don't want this rig to get too out of control with pedals as I already have a small Gator pedal board filled with my expression, sustain and vent. I'm after that clav-wah-phaser/flanger/-fender twin combo. Thinking a Multi FX pedal with an expression pedal for the way as a no fuss solution that I can also use for my Rhodes as I may bring that out on some of these gigs too. I'm a bit of a tone snob. Just wanted to get that out of the way!

What multi FX units should I be looking that:

* have good amp simulation

* have the expression pedal for way

* good stomp box emulation for modulation FX

* small-ish footprint - love the size of the VOX StompLab IIG

* $300-ish limit

Thanks!

Tough call on a single unit for all under $300. Have to probably break that budget a little. I wasnt familiar with the VOX - if it sounds good, $89 is a heck of a price point.

Take a look at the BOSS GT 100:

I might be inclined to build a little pedal board slowly picking what I like.

The units listed above should all do the job nicely. Also, the old POD's can be found for very cheap and also work well. I have one that I sometimes use with my Rhodes. As far as I'm concerned, all of these sound pretty similar to one another. If you're a tone snob, deep down you know that you'll end up buying individual pedals later anyways! :)

You have a Mackie mixer with an Aux send/Return, Why not using it to get a one rack unit? Lexicon MX300? Or TC M350? I have both of them and there are great on my sunths....Even cheaper if you buy them used ....

+1

I wonder why users of analog vintage instrument are willing to run (digitising !) ´em thru relatively cheapo guitar fx devices where only a few (if at all ...) offer analog path for distortion/overdrive but use AD/DA for all the other FX.

Using an analog mixer for dry signal and auxes for wet is the much better choice, IMO.

TC M350 is very affordable and very good for live usage,- I use it for delay and reverb for instruments not offering these FX but already come w/ good modulation FX like phasor, chorus and tremolo (which p.ex. in my trusty Rhodes MK80 are all ANALOG !).

My Minimoog D and Oberheim Xpander sound very good when using the M350 as an aux effect for delay and reverb.

The M350 isn´t my only digital hardware aux FX device,- I also use Digitech Studio 400 (quad channel multi FX) and Yamaha REV7.

I only kept these FX devices because they have special functionality/routing and/or some character as also the analog rackmount FX I kept have too,- Rocktron Prochorus and Vesta Fire SF-010 stereo chorus/flanger.

I also kept (and maintain) some analog distortin devices like the Chandler Tube Driver rackmount device and the Rocktron GAP-1 (which I consider to be the better device for jan-hammerish synth leads, he himself used Tom Scholz Rockman for) ...

Finally,- if I still used my Clavinet D6 and (Fender-) Rhodes pianos I sold some time ago,- I´d never run ´em thru any digital FX chain before mixer-input or amp since that means 2 conversions for the overall output signal of the instrument.

When using the auxes, it keeps the original signal untouched,- but when it needs to run thru the entire device,- it should be analog.

When using other FX than mentioned above and for what purpose ever, I use what´s available in and for S|C SCOPE on XITE-1, which is my audio swiss-army-knife since march 2012 (usable w/ TWO 16-channel excellent quality AD/DA converters).

A.C.
