Cool not-so-new effects?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the Cool New Effects thread seems to have gotten buried, and didn't want to dredge it up. However, in assembling my 21st Century Pedalboard, I'd run into quite a few very cool toys that I thought I'd share with the Forum, in case anyone else is looking for a slightly bent sound.

First up is the Catalinbread Bicycle Delay. It's not often that you see a pedal inspired by LSD-25 - seriously. The name refers to Dr. Albert Hoffman's LSD-fueled bicycle ride home from his lab, back in 1943. It's a Delay pedal, but . . . I've included two videos, because it deserves them.

No, it's not a goof - well, not entirely - but a very good rundown of the Bicycle Delay, what it does, and what inspired it. Just watch - [video:youtube]

Next up is the Subdecay Harmonic Antagonizer: Fuzz w/Oscillator. I was looking for something kind of like the EQD Data Corrupter, with a smaller footprint. IMHO, Zappa would have loved this thing . . .

Then there's this thing . . . Charlie Foxtrot comes from military slang, in the NATO phonetic Alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie . . .). I leave it to others to translate.

Granular Delay - takes your input signal, slices and dices it, and sends it back out all but unrecognizable. I'd been looking at the Red Panda Particle Delay, but it was a good bit more $$$ with a bigger footprint. This thing showed up at a price I could afford, and I'm a big fan of Malekko gear, so . . . Not for the faint of heart, or those with delicate ears.

Ah, thank you, brother. I hoped these were interesting enough to share; I liked them enough that they all have a place on my current pedalboard.

FWIW, I found all three of those on GC's Used Gear listings, from different stores in very different locations (Georgia, Michigan and Texas). All three arrived in top shape, I might almost have thought they were new! My thought is that some players are ordering these strange boutique pedals, thinking they'll find a use for them, and when they don't, those are the first pedals they'll trade in on something else. All the better for me . . .

I'm particularly interested in their Gamut (V2) Germanium Booster; I think it'd serve my wants and needs VERY well. Unfortunately, they're sold-out and hard to come by.

I'm very pleased with my Fulltone 2B ("Tubey"); while being both a booster and equipped with germanium, it is a very different animal from the Gamut. I will say that I do not doubt that it may well be the best 'clean -boost', overdriving-boost and buffer out there- and they're not expensive. HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.

Haven"t gotten my hands on a Gamut, but I currently own a Crimson King, Big Green, and Shepherd. Damn good builder. Aiming for a Soothsayer and Klon.

They"re one of the 3 British pedalmakers I"m binging on while the chaos of Brexit works in my favor. I"m pretty close on completing my highest-priority acquisitions from Magnetic Effects and ThorpyFX.

FYI, Catalinbread seems to be in a legal spat with some of its employees/former employees. Might be time to be very careful with them.

Hmmmmm.... That sure looks like a fugly mess...

Now, this looks interesting:

(I couldn't give a damn about the alleged bass impersonation- Octron, please!- but the rest of the twingey tweezy ring-mod potential has my ear... )

Subdecay makes some very fun stuff. Other than the Harmonic Antagonizer, I have a version of their Prometheus Filter, and I've been waiting to get their Starlight Flanger for a while.

Here's another toy I had to add in. If you haven't seen this guy's videos before, they're very entertaining, if you have half an hour to kill watching someone else play with a new toy. Nonetheless, this is probably the most in-depth demo of Keeley's Bubbletron you're going to see, and even then, he misses something! (The Dynamic Phaser is really two Phasers in one, one of which is controlled by the Rate knob. To disengage it, dial the Rate knob all the way CC. Turn it up, and you'll hear two Phaser effects at once.)

You get two FX banks, A & B: Bank A has Dynamic Flanger, Dynamic Phaser, and an LFO-driven Stepped Filter. Bank B has a conventional LFO-driven Flanger, an LFO-driven Phaser, and a Dynamic Envelope Filter; think of that Jerry Garcia sound, or somebody playing 9th Chords in a Funk band. You change FX banks via a tiny internal dip switch. There's also another internal dip switch that lets you choose between Vintage & Modern voicing for the effects. I have mine on Bank A, Vintage, FWIW.

I read through some of the Complaint - yes, really, I slogged through it. Not sure how much to believe, nor am I committed to either side of the argument, but I agree with you, this probably would not be the time to make a large investment in new CB pedals. OTOH, looking at their website, it seems like all of their current line-up is In Stock, and I recall that one of the issues in the complaint was that the Defendants had slowed production? If CB Effects had to replace most of their crew, which it seems they would from the lawsuit, they've gotten production back up.

Kind of in the same headspace on that myself.

I think the majority of the mess could have been avoided with a better will, but thats a discussion for a different thread.

I was tempted to put this one in the "My Next Stompbox" thread; maybe not next, but on my list. Until I heard this thing, I didn't feel like I needed a dedicated Reverb pedal, but this is more than just a Reverb box, with swells, bent tones, and a version of the "Freeze" effect, all in one compact box. Oh, yeah, it's a nice Reverb sound, too. I also give the guy in this video credit for a tasteful playing style that lets the box speak for itself.

[font:Century Gothic]Boss is bringing out a programmable graphic EQ pedal, which makes me wonder why EQ pedals fell so far out of favour. You can do so much with 'em![/font]

Boss did this before, when they brought out their Twin Pedal series, more than 10 years ago - Boss Programmable EQ

You could store 9 different EQ settings as presets. I don't remember anyone buying one, when I sold Music gear.

Somehow, while I long ago seemed to want surgical precision EQ control and would have loved a programmable graphic EQ, I've since gotten to like broader tonal control like a good fat mid-boost or treble and bass knobs on an amp or even just a tone control. I get inside the tone with small volume-knob adjustments and my "touch" while using fuzzes and octave-fuzzes and the like...

Now, I thought, "Hey, Dannyalcatraz would dig THIS... "

I figured, ya dig the JHS Muffuletta, so...

My Carl Martin Octa Switch has dip switches, too: so far, dirt accumulation hasnt been an issue. So far.

Your point is valid, though.

Im not sure theres a real solution, either. Sliders- like on EQ pedals- have the same issue. A host of tiny flip switches like they used on the circuit selectors could be delicate. Other switches might make the pedal huge.

Tying the controls into an app would help with all of those issues, but then you need to have your mobile device handy...

@Dannyalcatraz - one friend retired his Godin LGX-SA because he couldn't stand the noise from the sliders anymore.

Moving on . . . I was looking at one of these in my nearest GC yesterday. Talked myself out of it for the moment, but . . . One issue is that most of the demo videos are using Guitars with SC's, and the Phaser sounds thin as a result.

Ooh, that's pretty nice. Dare I ask how much it costs? I'm pretty happy with my Big Joe phaser, but this has a lot of different options. Could just move Big Joe to the bass pedal board.
