Probably not a bug, but I don't love the way the forum is at the hard left of the browser window.

I can't post in SSS either. I don't see New Topic, and there's no reply box in the threads.

We have to remove the old logos, put in a new one, etc.

New one isn't done yet.

I appear to be the only one who can - not sure why. I can't change Craig's status either.

Jim is napping currently (well deserved, I might add). He'll fix...

Does NOT work well on mobile (safari, specifically). Not getting the whole page in the screen, have to scroll sideways even to read everything I’m typing just now. Seems a bit cluttered on the homepage. Is great on desktop.

One thing I noticed is that clicking on a thread with new posts doesn't take me to the newest post like before and just goes to the top of the page.

Try re-entering the sig - that may do it.

No big deal, but musicplayer.com is a page with a link to the forums, while www.musicplayer.com is just a 404.

For me (Win 10, Chrome), if I'm reading a thread and click the Chrome bookmark to get back to the main forum page, all thread are then marked as read. Didn't work that way on the old forum... all thread remained marked unread until I actually read them.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or intended, however I'm seeing a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of my browser window, which remains even after I expand the width of the window.

On my system it has been hard left since the last closest thing to an overhaul. OSX 10.10.5 all versions of Firefox from then to current version. But it now appears to be even harder left like no space at all. Before it was not centered but there was maybe a couple of character spaces from the very edge of the browser window.

Different topic: I think the area for the avatar is very cluttered looking. Needs more blank space like signage needs blank space for it to be easy on the eyes. The text is justified to the left. It might look better justified centered and the font i point or 2 smaller. The avatar is too large for the allotted space. I also do not see value in the locations being active links to a map. It would be fine if the active link did not have the underline. But the underline only adds to the clutter. Somehow Kawaii James's looks good. If the avatar size was limited to what he has it could all work. But with a larger avatar and when people post the city state and country and the city is two longer words it is an eyesore.

Agreed, I’m. It liking having to go to the top of the page in order to get back to the topic list.

I’ve realized one of the reasons why this is a really big problem for me. I have the forum set to show 50 or some huge number of posts per page, so the lack of jumping to the first unread post can cause me to have to do major scrolling.

I guess I’ll set it to something smaller until this gets fixed.

(This is also why I complain when people talk about posts on certain pages, because it is a different number for me.)

Thanks for all the comments!

It may take a minute until we get a handle on this. We would have loved to have been able to be more careful and thorough about the migration...but we HAD to be off the old server by last Friday as it was wiped and taken out of service, so we felt getting the forums to a safe space was the most important thing.

«Ive not had much chance to play with it yet but it sounds pretty good so far and looks like it might give Korg Module a run for its money.»

Only me having the apostrophe substituted by a white question mark on black background? Using Safari on iPad in Norway.

Here’s another example from the same thread about the «Pure Synth Platinum for iPad» which looks normal:
«I'll have to give this a try, their Neo Soul Studio EP's really upped my EP sounds!»

Probably not a bug, but a feature I miss is the "Posts" feature under "My Stuff" in the old forum. I used it to quickly check for activity on whatever threads I was participating in on the rare occasions when something (like work) limited my time on KC.

iPad version: is it possible to increase the padding on the margins and increase the leading of the default font. This will fix up the cluttered appearance of posts, avatars bumping into the left edge, unnecessary scrolling to read content on the right.

EDIT - the desktop version is displayed all the way to the left while the right margin is too wide. Can the page be centered in the space or equal padding set up on both sides.

AND - quotation marks, apostrophes are displaying as question marks in black diamonds in Mac OS / iOS Safari.

Not a bug, but I miss the gridlines around the categories (Thread Title, Replies, Views, Last Post); the visual boundaries help make things more readable/easier on the eyes.

Fully concur. This layout makes it unreadable for me. frown Once in the topic all is well. it's topic screen that is VERY hard on the eyes.

Thanks guys - keep them coming!

PLEASE NOTE that everything here may noit be rersponded to in this thread/right away...but Jim knows the thread is here.

He's one man and is up to his ears in post-migration/upgrade stuff at the moment, so everything may not get fixed quickly...but we'll do our best to get to everything asap.

I just posted in Dave Ferris' thread about cataract surgery, and used larger text to wish him a happy birthday. In Safari/Mac (I haven't tried another browser yet), the text is cut off on the top.

Not a bug, but I get a 'Not a Secure Site' type warning at log in. I would think that securing the site would be kind of a high priority.

I took a screenshot of the log in page, but don't see a way to 'attach' it to the post.
Just read that I should click the 'attachment manager', but I don't think it's available when editing a post.
I'll try another new post.

Nope - just tried 'use full editor' for a 'new post' and still don't see an attachment manager, unless I'm staring right at it and don't see it. blush

Not just you. There are a bunch of my posts from the old site that now exhibit similar issues (this one, for example, and other posts on the same page which exhibit the problem.)

Chances are it’s because iOS and macOS automatically use “smart quotes” on text entry, converting the normal ASCII characters to extended Unicode versions to distinguish between open and close quotes, and between a straight apostrophe and the curly equivalent. New posts appear to be fine, but the conversion process left a lot of ugly reinterpretations in its wake.

Not a bug, but on the old forum you could easily navigate back (one click) to the main forum page from the bottom of a thread. That's no longer the case. The "Hop To" drop-down menu is cool, but it requires more than one action to return to the main forum page.

UBB handles most image formats fine, it's the fact that Mr. Insects didn't use a direct link to the image file but rather the imgur page itself. Here is what he meant to do:

Truly exciting, but also utterly dependent on the recipient having a device that contains the emoji set you’re using. The “mind blown” emoji someone responded with, for example, wasn’t added to the standard until 2017 so anyone with an older OS definitely won’t see it. It becomes something of a minefield and fragmented experience ... but a fun one, for all that! 🥳

A temporary accommodation of the hard left "centering" can be implemented by opening the sidebar where Bookmarks are displayed if you use Firefox.

It shifts the layout over about 2 inches.

I didn't anticipate how I would feel so much better with this where it belongs.

Bug, I believe:

More often than not, when I return to topics with new postings, I am sent to the first post, rather than the first unread post. I haven't cleared my cache, nor am I browsing anonymously.

I was going to edit my post from yesterday, but the edit button is gone now.

Anyways, that post referred to the forum help: http://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/faq

"Can I attach a file to my post" - towards the bottom of the page.

As much as I totally get how convenient it would be, we've chosen not to engage the attachments function.

A) We don't want to pay for the space to host them, and
B) We don't want to have to check each one/be legally responsible for them.

Besides...we're all used to the off-site hosting photo thing... idk

"Used to" seems a bit strong. roll

I'm now seeing a number in parenthesis in the topic lists that I believe shows the number of unread posts in a thread. That's a good start. I'm still hoping that we'll get back to being taken to the first unread post and having visiting one thread wiping our unread info in all the others, but this helps. thu

I changed the the character set from utf-8 to iso-8859 which displays old posts before migration correctly. The only problem is that any posts made since the migration might be screwy. Moving forward it should be consistent.

My style is to cruise the posts, and opportunistically post replies. I got a "300 second wait" message just now. Errr, that's five minutes between replies. Not exactly productive for speedsters like me. Can we adjust that parameter?

I prefer no avatars. It fits more postings on the screen. However, when avatars are turned off in preferences, all postings sport a 140px by 140px blank avatar with a letter in it corresponding to the first letter of the posters handle. Is there a way to make avatars truly disappear when "no" is selected?

Here's the problem. There's a warning by the range setting that says:

Warning: Large ranges can lock forums until the search is complete.

I knocked it up to three years from two. Let's see what that does.

Another readability issue here, can the spacing between the lines/sentences in a post be slightly increased?

The bottleneck throttles bandwidth to 3kB/sec. Try a bottle that isn't tinted any color.

To reduce the vertical space consumed by short postings, I find that it is better to turn avatars ON because most avatars are smaller than the default. Feel free to use my 1x1 pixel avatar.

Not a bug, but are there any plans to switch to a different theme? This one is very... white. It's a bit rough on the eyes. And there is no horizontal seperation between the threads on the thread list page anymore.

Scroll to the very bottom of any page to the Style Chooser. Yours probably reads "ubbcentral." Switching it to "ubbthreads" might help. Save that in Preferences if you like.

LOL... I just tried that. It turned all the light blue borders to an off yellow.... with still the huge white space. Unfortunately this current "theme" is really hurting my eyes.

Having the same issues as the others. When selecting a thread to read, Im taken to the top of the most recent page instead of the first unread posting. This wasnt the case prior to the upgrade. Is there a setting that will fix this?

A couple more things...

The favicon is currently the default ubb one. Would be nice to get the old one back (little black/blue speaker from the Music Player Network Logo)

The left hand column width in threads is also bugging me. Looks like it dynamically adjusts based on the size of the avatar. It would be nice if this dimension were fixed so everything is uniform.

Believe it or not, Future Music wanted to keep the logo even though we got the brand.

In fixing the read/unread posts issue, would it also be possible to keep a more permanent record of unread threads as opposed to marking them all as read after one session?

Man, I've been hoping for that since day -999. Every other forum does that, so that when the upgrade here moved in the opposite direction, it was quite a shock (I'm sure this will get fixed. No way that wiping out unread counts is supposed to happen).

It becomes something of a minefield and fragmented experience ... but a fun one, for all that! 🥳

I saw in another thread that Jim switched the character set to be more compatible with the old quotes and characters. Unfortunately, it looks like we lost the emoji with that change. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

Seems that I can't open the "quote" page in a new tab? I used that all the time for when I wanted to quote multiple people; open all the needed ones, then copy-paste each of them into my reply.

Not sure if this is something that really counts as a bug, but is there a way to not make the location on our profile link to Google Maps? Not exactly my preferred situation.

I'll let you know if I come upon anything that no one else has mentioned yet. Thanks for your work!!

Edit: thought of something else: is there any way to make it so that when we log in, that we are automatically returned to the thread we were viewing before logging in? Not a biggie, but some forums I'm on do that. It's just handy.

I prefer dark themes for forums, code editors and the like so I've been fiddling around with a dark style for the forum using a CSS script. I used the dark Talkbass style as an example. The style gets installed with a browser extension called Stylus. The example below is in Firefox.

I am an amateur with CSS. Much of the forum content is hard-coded into HTML table cells without CSS selectors, things like images and such. Without selectors their modification with straight CSS is fiddly.

There is a great deal more that could be done to it but I much prefer it as-is to the stock appearance.

Im pretty sure the default styles for UBB have something similar. Ive seen it in their support forums. Id love to see those options built in here.

Fully concur. This layout makes it unreadable for me. frown Once in the topic all is well. it's topic screen that is VERY hard on the eyes.

Ah! I knew it seemed awkward to navigate, but hadn't put my finger on why... that's it! It's not a problem inherent to this version of the bbs software... pianoworld uses the same software and they have the gridlines. OTOH, they solve the ugly no-left-margin problem by filling it with ads. ;-) It's okay, they don't bother me. Actually, I prefer a "Thread Title" column that isn't so wide. It just makes it harder to associate the info on the left with the info on the right, with all that unnecessary blank space in the middle. (One other thing I like about pianoworld's implementation... the 4-year search windows. It means I don't have to do as many incremental searches on the same terms to cover the desired amount of time.)

As for other requests... Dark mode, ugh! Do people really find it easier to read small white text on a black background?? But to each his own... And emojis? Man, I am so old... but apparently not old enough to appreciate a return to hieroglyphics.

Not sure if this is a bug, but the new forum no longer has the my stuff button when youre logged in? I use my posts to quickly find threads, but I dont see that in the drop-down menu under my login name.

Can we maybe make a list with all addressed bugs and keep that up to date in you OP dB? Not sure if that's too much work, but would be nice to have an overview.

I did see an Emoticon in Joe's post, but now it's just random characters. I get some weird characters a lot, but I think that is already addressed.

It's still there. Click your username on the upper right. You'll see a little speech bubble with number of posts next to it. Click that and it will take you to a list of all your posts.

Does anyone else but me have a scrollbar on the bottom of every page of the forum? (except http://www.musicplayer.com/) There is nothing on the right side to scroll to.

In the last line in the following snippet, the scrollbar can be removed with either width:99% or padding:0px, or just deleting the padding setting. With the padding, I think this div element is larger than 100%, thus the horizontal scrollbar.

This is located in the first 50-60 lines or so, immediately following the <head></head> section.

HTML
</head>
<body onclick="if(event.which!=3){clearMenus(event)}">
<button onclick="topFunction()" id="top-button" title="Return to Top"><i class="fas fa-chevron-up fa-lg" style="vertical-align:0;"></i></button>
<div id="content" class="fw" style="display:table;">

<div style="width: 100%; padding: 5px; text-align:center">

Thanks again for all of these! They're really helpful as we try to get the kinks out having gone through more than a few years of upgrades really fast AND having migrated our server. I still can't believe we pulled this off... cool grin

Even though you may not get a direct response or see thesew addressed right away, Jim is certainly looking at all of them. Really great to have an organized list. smile

My icon that shows I've got a PM always shows I've got a new message, even when I've already read them. This was happening before the server update and continues to happen now

A few little anomalies:

Most threads when you click on them give the full path of links to where you are at the top of the page, i.e.:
Musicplayer.com > forums > keyboard corner > etc

But some of them for whatever reason only show musicplayer.com with nothing after that. A current example is the 70s Polysynth thread. (CLONK)

Also, on Craig Anderton's SSS forum, when you click on a thread, new posts will show up with a little red box that saws "new", but I haven't seen that any place else. That would be nice, especially since it's not jumping to the unread posts....at least that way you can scroll to the first "new" one.

The title of that thread is also missing in the browser window/tab top.

Followup to my last post regarding posts marked "new". It's not specific to SSS vs other forums. I figured out that it's only on threads that I started. But again, it would be nice anytime I come back to see what's new on anything, not just threads I started myself.

I tried liking a post yesterday. I clicked on the like button and got sent to Facebook. ? I have no intention of joining Facebook simply to acknowledge a post. Can this be simplified?

Those two buttons are specifically to Like or share a post on Facebook to let your friends know about this place and your activity.

There has never been a "liking" of posts on KC.

I just thought it might have been an addition in the new site. Joe's site had it, and its on others I frequent.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

(now to test whether it will remember posts not read when I leave the site and come back. That would be new behavior vs. pre-update, but something I've hoped for for years.)

I skimmed the entire topic & didn't see this so hopefully I'm not restating something already brought up:

I always check the "Keep me logged in" box but always have to sign in again when I pull up the site.

That was my serious reply - now for my smarmy one:

The analog version of the forum sounded better smile

Sadly, this doesn't seem to work. I hope it's on the list. If not, please add it. I *think* other UBB sites do it, but I'm not sure. Other fora do it, I know that for sure.

Even if all threads in a forum are read, when I come back the icon is yellow as if there are unread posts/threads. I'm not sure if this only happens across logins or also when returning.

So far, so good.

I did have the chance to review the forum's policy about profanity. I guess there's no good solution: people like me, the people I work with at the day job, and people in general with whom I choose to hang out tend to curse a whole lot. It's really its own form of speech. But, I don't see any other option to cut off some truly offensive speech than just avoid it. I guess, I fortune-teller Zeldar see a bunch of asterisks in the future. Oh well, it's probably for the best.

One thing I think is still missing and is a big aid in forums is mouse-over preview of a given thread.

I don't know anything about web design or how much control one has over the BBS software, but, while I understand having maximal click-throughs, I don't really need to open every single thread about which expression pedal if the OP is just doing another thing.

I will defend all requests for piano tab for that tune "Jump," though. Can't quite get that one right.

I should mention something - one of the guitar forum folks was on Facebook saying he came here and it prompted him to accept the terms of use but he couldn't find the actual terms to agree to and left the site. I ran into that once myself and just clicked OK. He was maybe just being a little cautious about not agreeing to something he couldn't read, and I think I talked him into coming back, but it should be noted that it is possible to get that prompt without seeing what you're agreeing to. He was an existing member but I think first visit since the migration.

OK definitely not a bug, but the new look...

To mis-quote Spinal Tapp "None more white".
Unlike every other forum (& there are quite a few) that I view daily, this feels like someone shining a flashlight in my face.
I know the old one wasn't TOO much different, but it really kind of hit me when I first saw this.
I DO like the (tiny) inset of avatars, and the dark blue buttons, but is there maybe some way to ameliorate the assault of whiteness?

You now have a few options, including dark themes by changing your selection in the drop-down at the very bottom of the page. I doubt all of them are fully configured but I tried one of the dark ones and quite liked it. It's great seeing the constant evolution thu

On a big monitor, I think it's the huge amount of white in the middle, between the topic names on the left and the reply count, # views, and last post time on the right. It also makes it hard to associate the info on the left with the info on the right. Also related to the loss of margin, i.e. making everything line up hard on the left, perhaps. The key for me was... make your window narrower.

You guys all see the selection of styles at the bottom of the threads (under HOP TO) now?

You can switch your view to one of the Dark Modes if you want.

I never would have found that. It's not even labeled as to what it does! Cool, though. As I think I mentioned earlier, Dark themes are not for me, because I hate inverse type. But I did like the alternate approaches there that presented many more subject lines per screen, also minimizes having to scroll on the main page to have to get past all the pinned posts (more annoying when I'm working on a smaller screen). I think it will be UBBT70 for me. I like that UBBTHREADS shows the most per page, but I'd miss having the lines that separate each thread title from the next. Plus the color is ugly. ;-)

So, all of sudden, yesterday, the forum has a very different look, strong deep blues and lighter blues as boxes around choices. Cool.

But I made a post in which I embedded a link to a website. Normally you'd see the text describing where this link takes you because it's in a very noticeably different color, making it obvious. In this case I can't tell that there's something to click on unless I zoom way out, and then the dark blue type indicating it's a link is somewhat clear. But at normal zoom, I didn't see the link AT ALL, black and dark blue are just too similar to my eyes.

Here's my post with a link. Perhaps lime green could be used (kidding) to better show the contrast, or whatever was done before.

On a side note, I'm very glad this new forum doesn't try to use a typeface that is not a full black! There's a number of them, I imagine they're going for a minimalist look?, and it's more like a darkish grey color that makes it hard for old eyes to read!

We set the default for UBBT77 for now. We may add a few more...but anyone can see whichever one they prefer.

Haven't made a formal announcement about the Styles yet because we're making a bunch of changes and haven't settled on some of them...but it does feel like we can/should do a Global Announcement on this one. thu

I kept mine on ubbthreads for years. I liked keeping the theme different when I was logged in so I knew without checking. But these new themes are so readable and modern compared to those two. JMO.

"UBBT77 - Dark" styling needs a little tweak -- the scroll bar slider and the scroll bar background are the same color (at least they are on Chrome), so you can't see where the slider is to grab it with the mouse. It still works of course, if you guess right -- you just can't see where it is.

I'm back to UBBCENTRAL too (though it must be my imagination, I thought it looked different last time I looked at it). It doesn't have threads with new content in bold which I'd very much prefer, but the number in parentheses in the Replies column somewhat compensates. The lack of lines between thread topics isn't an issue because the thread titles themselves are underlined. There's something aesthetically off in some ways, but maybe it's just a matter of what I'm used to. (Is the line spacing when viewing posts tighter? and some other things...)

I don't like any quite as much as what we used to have, or even the current pianoworld.com version (again, maybe in part what I'm used to). The new default is pretty but just presents too few topics on the screen at once (like half as many as UBBCENTRAL when I'm on a smaller screen).

Suggestion for the mods when evaluating themes, if they're not doing this already... check the page on a large monitor, on a small (11"-13") laptop screen, on an iPad in vertical mode, and in horizontal mode... different issues arise in terms of readability and in how much scrolling you need to do...

sorry if it has already been said but, the "MusicPlayerNetwork" logo being in fixed size prevents the correct resizing of the template.
you'd have to add

Code
#content.fw center img {width: 100%; max-width: 847px;}

to make it work properly.

you'd have to add

Code
#content.fw center img {width: 100%; max-width: 847px;}

to make it work properly.

Thx! Will make sure Jim sees it.

I've run into a number of threads over the past few years where MalwareBytes Premium would block a site like the first picture, most likely a site hosting someone's avatar picture. Haven't yet run into it on the main forum site. I was using AVG, but now (on Win 10) use Microsoft's AV and MalwareBytes Premium - has worked out well.
Usually when I see the avatar site problem, I post in the thread so that whoever is using an avatar hosted at that site can move their avatar elsewhere.

I'm back to UBBT70. I missed the bolding of newly updated topics in ubbthreads and ubbcentral (and ubbcentral also suffered from a hard to read--insufficient line spacing?--typeface for paragraphs and the loss of some helpful visual elements). Your new default is still the most pleasing, but there's just too much white space. I don't mean too white in a sense that could be addressed with a dark theme, I mean just too much screen area with no useful content, so there is an inordinate amount of scrolling on small screens like my Macbook Air or iPad. It would be nice if UBBT70's main thread page could be tightened up some (those other ubb themes show many more threads on the screen at once, at least in part because easy visual topic differentiation is accomplished by underlining rather than somewhat thick dividers), but at least it's still better than the new default.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our new video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out!

It seems like I'm having posts getting marked as read and I have not seen them. I didn't see J. Dan's thread about his bandmate's death until just now, and I know I've been here in between. I didn't see his reply to my reply on his Stairway thread until I looked for it. It was way down, and marked as read.

Nice job on the conversion / migration! Not a bug, but a ques and a request..

1. What does the bolding of the first 5-10 messages mean? (you probably explained that somewhere, sorry for the repeat)

2. Would it be blasphemy to suggest change the top of the page - by putting the garage sale and shameless plugs as hyperlinks (next to Search, Forum Help)? That way, the main forum would rise to the top and occupy the prime screen real estate?

Bug report (this is technical stuff):

I subscribed to the Keyboard Corner RSS feed located at http://forums.musicplayer.com/cache/rss18.xml

The file is invalid XML though, because of this part in the code:
Code
<title>Looks can be deceiving ( a Leslie story )</title>
<dc:creator>Math&Music</dc:creator>

The & character should be encoded as
Code
&amp;

The file being invalid, my feed reader cannot parse it and displays an error message. This is a bug in the forum software, I don't know if fixable here or should I report to the vendor.

Just want to take the opportunity from a daily reader and occasional poster to thank Dave and crew for all the fantastic upgrades taking place. I've never enjoyed my visits to the forum as much as I have in the past month or so.

Is anyone else having issues with embedded video not loading on the forum? I assumed it was user error yesterday, but now I'm seeing a number of embedded YouTube vids absent from some threads, when they'd been active before. Same issue on multiple browsers.

Same here. I did a number of tests using preview. No joy.

The style UBBT70_Dark does not show many images (emojis and the like). Perhaps it is the directory reference "default_dark". I checked some other styles that show the images. They use "default'.

UBBT70 - Light ... <img src="https://forums.musicplayer.com/images/graemlins/default/roll.gif" alt="roll" title="roll" width="39" height="15">

UBBT70 - Dark ... <img src="https://forums.musicplayer.com/images/graemlins/default_dark/roll.gif" alt="roll" title="roll" width="39" height="15">

Minor bug - the Post Reply button makes it look like you can reply to Announcements, but when you try you get rejected. Maybe hide this when replies are disallowed.

I'm hip - I found that out a few days ago.

The issue is that those are created as just a regular post in a forum (they're all in FORUM NEWS, then you enable it as a Global Announcement. Part of me wanted to try putting a Poll in the Dark Mode Global I just put up - I wonder what would happen there.

Just wanted to give a shout that while the older embedded videos still aren't appearing, newly posted ones are, and the 16:9 aspect ratio and higher resolution is a much-appreciated upgrade!

The https: conversion is what screwed all the videos up. The embeds are all http...

There's a way for everyone to adjust their browser, I hear...but that's a pain, especially for newcomers.

Also, the security has slowed the site down.

I believe we may just turn it off rather than have issues with 20 years worth of embeds, and have to deal with new ones working and old ones not, etc. Jim's looking into it.

Hi,
The size of the Music Player Network logo is now adaptive, which is good, but the ad is fixed size, which still prohibits comfortable use on a smartphone with a small screen.
May I suggest adding this to the style sheet?

Code
#content ins img {max-width:100%;}

Am I the last user in the world with a smartphone that is not the size of an 80's living room TV? (iPhone 5se)
Thanks

How do you figure, it changed to dark on its own and back to white on its own.
I'm talking about the logon page, not the forum list page.

When you're not logged in, yes, it will show you the default, which is the light (UBBT77). Once you're logged in, whatever one you chose will stick until you change it.

Since I'm almost always logged in, I never see the default unless that's what I have set (as I do now).

That's because dB changed the default for the site and then changed it back.
