USB MIDI to MIDI Rack

Recommended Posts

Maybe I'm missing something really simple here... but can't connect my Launchkey controller to my old Roland Rack (MIDI only) with the UM-ONE MIDI/USB interface... I have a power supply for the controller but even with this the Roland Rack isn't recognizable... help please?

USB controllers need to be connected to USB hosts. That interface is designed to connect 5-pin MIDI gear to a USB host (like a computer). To directly connect a USB controller to 5-pin MIDI gear, you'll need a different kind of interface, e.g.:

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

Ah. The first clue that some USB thing probably won't work would be if it requires using that kind of adapter. ;-) Seriously, A and B are different shapes not to make everyone's life difficult, but because their mates are *functionally* different (host and slave), and they want to make sure that you don't do something silly like try to plug one host into another host or one slave into another slave. The incompatible ends assure that they will be used correctly. Adapting an end to the opposite shape usually just assures that you can use something in some wrong way that won't work. ;-) The adapters seem more useful as part of extensions, or adapting micro-USB/OTG which can perform both functions.

That's a great list of interfaces. Here are a few more:

Note: There are other iConnectivity interfaces, but I don't think they can act as a USB host for a USB-MIDI device, because they don't have the right type of USB port.
