Keepitsimple
Besides my own trio (sorry i had to do it ) which is now "no more" due to my relocation, my favorite trio based on my tastes was Aziza Mustafa Zadeh/Dave Weckl/John Patitucci: [video:youtube] Quote https://linktr.ee/rabihrihana
hurricane hugo
[font:Century Gothic]in no order whatsoever, and in keeping with the tenets in the opening post... Air (Henry Threadgill's band, not the French guys) Husker Du (1st-gen punk rocker here) Tangerine Dream A Tribe Called Red The Twilight Babies ( a local Detroit band from the early '00s) Rush ZZ Top The Jam ...Ekova and Austra would've been on this list for sure, but they always have/had an extra musician(s) for their live work. Could probably say the same about Dire Straits, Massive Attack, and Portishead, too. [/font] Quote http://blip.fm/invite/WorkRelease
Dr88s
Maybe not the "best", but honourable mention to Elton John's early trio with Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson. Quote Nord Stage 2 Compact, Yamaha MODX8

psionic11
I guess I'm more of direct rock kind of guy. Rush ZZ Top Police Triumph ELP Mercury Frost I'm sure there are many other greats, esp jazz, it's just I haven't been properly exposed to them. Most singer/guitarist acts fall here, but those are mostly glorified one man shows. Power trio is my favorite band structure. I'm a bassist/keyboardist who does occasional vocals and other instruments. Three is the magic number for artistic, personality, and functionality balance, provided each brings game without overwhelming ego. So much room and responsibility... Werno
Since there doesn't seem to be a keyboard requirement for this thread, and most of my favorite key-centric trios have already been mentioned, here's a trio I'd travel pretty far to see again- [video:youtube]
