OT: PC Builders - Intel Announces Shock Core i9-9900KS

Recommended Posts

The 2019 CPU war has just started as Intel has announced a surprise and unexpected CPU the Core i9-9900KS Special Edition. The new CPU is essentially a speed-binned Core i9-9900K, but instead of having an all-core turbo frequency of 4.7GHz and a base frequency of 3.6GHz, the new speed king can reach a massive 5GHz all-core boost and has a base frequency of 4GHz too. Thats out-of-the-box performance, yet thats what youd largely expect from overclocking a Core i9-9900K. The best news is I already have performance numbers for a 5GHz all-core overclock for the 9900K, which you can see below and these should be a good reference for comparing against any performance data we hear from AMD tomorrow.

Heres why it was announced today.

https://wccftech.com/watch-amds-computex-keynote-here-for-zen-2-navi-more-live-in-9-hours/

Ive been using i7 4790ks since 2014. Dont need 6 or 8 cores, dont need new chips either although the 9900KS is the best single core performer if its ready to sell.

I use Cinebech R15 Single Core to see which CPU trounces my 5 year old chips.

Not even the i9 9900KF or K trounce it.

Scores are 9.5% better.

The little Quad core i3 8350k is a beast for live gigs.

Runs cool, and is only 15% less Performance than the reigning i9 Chips, and costs 100 bucks.

But the 9900KS will guarantee AMD compete even harder Q3.

Most powerful CPU for gaming and audio, no bowda dowdt it.

You have a motherboard of choice for that i3 8350k?

AsRock z370 Pro, allowing 2 Ultra M.2 and 3 PCIe_x1 for audio cards, should work well.

But,- w/ 91W TDP, the i3 runs a bit hotter than i7 4790k w/ 88W TDP.

No biggie,- but you need a good cooling solution also w/ the i3.

Memory bandwidth is higher w/ the i3 !

Ah, hype:

Yup, a massive, immense, yuge, tornado-like, 6% speed increase. :blah:

What are the options for this 9900KS?

Depends if you want a rackmounted PC or tower with blinking lights and landing strips.

Reason I ask, I dont play games, I quit school in 3rd grade just cause they had recess.

On a more serious note cooling fans go from front to back in a rack, so the DIMMs need to be perpendicular to the faceplate.

ASRock makes the most no frills Audio friendly workstation boards around.

They even have one for the new 7nm CPUs al be it an X370.

But PCI 4.0 isnt mature and we dont need more than 400-450MBs per second anyways.

Ive got several NVMe devices ranging from 1.2 to 2.4GBs per second and they show zero difference.

I do use them for Omnisphere though because it loads Keyscape samples so fast theres no yellow progress bar.

For a rack Id go with the Supermicro Q370/i3 8350k.

Great for Softsynths using single core raw power like Zebra2HZ.

For a rack and new AMD Chips this Dog Will Hunt..

If you really, really think you need tons of cores and a good 4GHz base get the i7 8700k and the Supermicro Q370.

Thats a 10 year rig.

I still have a Gigstudio 2.54 rig with the Supermicro P4SCT+II and the Intel 3.4GHz Northwood P4.

Intel and Supermicro last for years if you dont needlessly overclock.

AMD not sure about, never owned one.

ASRock, Im not sure because I use them for 2 years then make them a spare.

Im like Cher on Rodeo Blvd.

I see something I like I get a few of them, Cher probably at least 6.

Im on my last i7 4790k, just built another brand new Z97 ASRock / 4790k.

Ill probably get the new AMD 3700X in a few years when it goes from 329 to 150.

Almost forgot.

New AMD CPUs need a Graphics Card.

However, the new ASRock shown above has the ASPEED AST2500 / 256MB DRAM built into the motherboard. Its graphics are fine our meager 2D needs.

It site right above the Blue PCI 3.0 slots.

If I did an i3 build in a small form factor with handle sort of gigging PC - Id hackintosh it because Im invested in MainStage and AUs. You have any suggestions on what to use as a monitor? For building setups at home I just use any old monitor - but not wanting to carry around something for just using live mode in MainStage. I think I might be able to use iPhone or iPad to switch songs - and I assume I could set a button or key on my controller to do this as well.

I use USB Powered AOCs, under 15 with a mic stand + VESA adapter.

Cant get into the BIOS using USB powered LCDs but theyre small, cheap and do the job.

Hacking a Z97 is the best choice due to chipset maturity. All the Hacks I know use C200 series Xeons or Z97s.

Its easy to set up.

Plus I use Aluminum Frames that I can grab by the handle on non Flying gigs.

Jobs where I fly I just stick the removable frame back into the ATA Shockrack.

Below is the PC, HX-3, SE-02 rig, covers all instruments sets up in minutes.
