I have good news. boing

It appears that we have struck an agreement with Future Music that will result in ownership and control of the forums being transferred to us. cool

This will allow us to migrate all the data safely and - finally - upgrade the forums to current standards.

We expect things to move pretty quickly. Stay tuned...

Good news I guess, but another migration? My grandparents migrated from Europe to America. My parents migrated from the east coast to the west. I migrated back to the east coast, then west again.

I just need a few days notice before this happens so I can fatten up the yaks and cure dried meats for the long haul . . .

I've said this many times before, but it has never borne repeating more than now: thanks so much, Dave, for all your efforts on our behalf! You started this forum, and it's only fitting that you should have control over its future. Well done, my friend!

Thanks to Jim as well for his hard work behind the scenes.

Best,

Have to say, this is the best forum I've ever been a part of and by far my favorite, talent here is unmatched, and on most forums I'm sorely dissapointed that that they don't come even close to the quality of posts. I was pleased to see a few weeks ago when a troll was engaging in facile and provoking judgements, that the civil tone of this forum was maintained! I'm happily surprised to see little to almost no trolling happening here!

Ditto. I get a lot of value out of this forum, both entertainment and professional development, and would be more than happy to pay a moderate subscription to help keep it alive.

Add me to this list too.

Wow! Good work dB! Thank you for this and all work you put in maintaining this community.

Is there any way we can help you with coming migration and/or preservation of the forums?

Great news, Dave, but who is funding it? Will this become a paid subscription forum, a donation forum or what?

A brand new corporation established specifically for this purpose.

The plan is to try and keep the forum itself free. I believe a rotating banner may appear at the top of the forum to help pay for that.

There most probably will be other sections that get added at some point (editorial/educational content, marketplace, etc) which may end up requiring a small subscription...but the goal is to keep the forum itself the way it is now, except with an up to date version of software and a single banner.

I've had conversations with a few of the people/organizations I know about the possibility of having them offer some of their goods/services to our community. I believe I might be able to find a way to make a curated selection of same available to those who would want it without disturbing the groove of the forum itself.

No reason I can see why there couldn't be a KC Beer of The Month club if someone wanted to set it up... smile

Unfortunately, my current 2 favorite beers are only available locally. There's a really nice IPA called Dragon Point, which was a local landmark. There is also the Hell-N-Blazes IPA, another local brew.

May I humbly suggest that, if there is the feeling that a little passing the hat might do some good, a Patreon page (or similar) for the Music Player Network might be the way to go? That way it's a voluntary contribution and can be flexible to whatever the user wishes to give. I don't envision many perks, mostly just a pay-what-you-will. I'm using Patreon as my example because of its recurring donation format vs a one-time buy-in. However, if we do makes caps or t-shirts, they could potentially also be sold through that platform.

dB, I know you've erred on the side of caution with this before, but perhaps this kind of flexible crowdfunding could work, now that we've (or will have) achieved independence.

My one percent of a toonie.

Not at the moment...but I'm not sure we need it right now. idk

The idea is to keep the forums looking and acting like they always have. I'm thinking a single banner at the top with rotating advertisers will cover the expense of the forums as well as - gasp - paying moderators.

The plan is for there to eventually be another separate area with editorial content (run by Steve Fortner) along with a marketplace where people can buy and sell music (sellers keep 100% of the revenue), services and goods. Think Keyboard mag, but with better ads and offerings. There are other folks who will come in to help with the other forums, some of which will probably get pruned.

We have a few other ideas....but the first goal is to get the forums preserved, migrated and upgraded.

I know there was a separate thread on suggestions, but this is something I thought of more recently.

At first I was thinking it would be great to have a forum on live sound production - PA, Lighting, etc. We've had some threads on that here, and there have been others on some of the other forums (guitar, bass, etc). But then I was thinking that people might not look at those other areas if they tend to only visit the KC.

So then I thought, what if there was a way to have a SINGLE thread that could span multiple sections.

Example: I'm looking for a guitar amp to run my keyboard through. Start a thread and do #guitar #keyboard and it shows up in both places, but if somebody from either place replies, it shows up in the same thread.

Don't know if that's possible, but it would be really cool for topics that cross over into other areas and would mean not needing something like a separate forum for live sound, or even recording (not sure how much that one is frequented - but there are lots of separate discussions on here as well as the guitar forum).

There is clearly the ability to do this at the admin level. The "Impending Forum System Server Migration" appeared in ALL forums with the same OP and replies. However, I have no idea if this could be available to any user (probably not without an admin doing it) and could be selected for a limited number of fora (guitar, keyboards, but not Downstairs Lounge, Bandwidth, etc.).

But maybe the latest UBB can. idk Maybe you could dig around their site and report back?

The t shirt idea is genius. Make it black with white graphics and I'll pay for the silk screens myself!

KC merch...what a concept. roll

The funny thing is...I could totally see it. Why not, right? idk

It's so cool that it's not just KC being migrated/upgraded/acquired. It's all the forums, the musicplayer.com domain and the name Music Player Network (but not that outdated logo).

cool w00t

I believe we can have quite a bit of fun with this site. I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised at the people who are interested in helping us. smile

P.S. the migration is happening right now.

I this hasn't already been sussed out, may I suggest the community submit contenders for a logo for the keyboard section of the new site. Here's one I think might have some of the right elements. I took Samuel's avatar and played around with it. It needs a lot of work, to make it clearer. But my point for this one, is that in the end, it's always about the people. Gear and technical chops, of course. But the community, camaraderie and spirit are what this is all about, yes? And I think Samuel's pic kind of embodies that idea. Maybe create an outline type version, like the PGA Tour or MLB logos.

In principle, i hate me-too posts.
I means, why to post just to write what other tens of forum members posted already.

But this time i'll make an exception: thanks for saving the forum.
And good luck for the new adventure !

My mind is kinda blown, that's for sure. HeadPop

Here's the basic outline as far as plan:

Step 1 - migrate/acquire and secure data (in process).

Step 2 - upgrade to current version of software, preserving current look/feel of forums as much as possible.

Step 3 - prune and adjust current selection of forums.

Step 4 - add single rotating ad banner to forums.

Step 5 - add editorial content in a separate area of the site. Steve Fortner and Mike Metlay to spearhead keyboard and recording efforts.

There's more, but that feels like a reasonable start. idk

Thank you. This is a valuable resource. I do not contribute much, but I have learned a lot of the years. I stumbled across this forum 9 years ago when researching some gear and have been coming back ever since. Thanks for taking this on. This would be a great loss if it disappeared.

Now that we have full control, I think a more businesslike approach is called for. In fact, we should consider rebranding. I always think of this place as KC so maybe it is time to take things to the next level....have a collective thought shower....perform a paradigm shift...workshop & upscale well beyond our keyboard roots.....but still maintaining the essential KC flavour... I have a few suggestions for your consideration:

Khromatose Collection
Koda Cola
Krotchety Crowd
Kronos Creek
Kurtzweil-U-Wait

If you decide to go with any of my suggestions, I will be happy to accept payment in bitcoins. (They would need to be chocolate).
