In my duo act, we mix ourselves and feed everything directly into the mixer (2 keys, 2 mics, guitar, and sometimes drum mics.). We have been using a Soundcraft Signature 12 and were pretty happy with it. Pretty clean, good features, and decent mic pres for the price. ($400)

However, my home studio board bit the dust (old Mackie 1402 VLZ) so Im replacing it with the Soundcraft and we are going to start using my brothers Zoom Livetrack L-12. It has an interesting set of features for live use including scene memory, mutitrack recording to SD card, and 5 custom headphone/monitor mixes.

I have my own mix in my IEMS so I can get a bit more Kronos 61/Prosoloist Rack+/Hammond SK2/Fantom XR/Kronos 73 if I need it.

The Samson SM10 also provides phantom power so I can plug in my headset mike and get my vocals in too.

Great mixer!

I use the Kronos as a mixer for FOH.

I do use a Zoom H6 as an IEM mixer though. It allows me to bring Keys, ambient mics and monitor mix or slave feed to my ears, with built in limiting.

Allen & Heath Zed 10. It is rock solid for reliability, but I'm not happy with the sound and think there are better options. I need a lot of inputs at home, though. 3 keyboards, MacBook, iPad and mic.

Thinking about trying the Radial Largo for some gigs, though.

If you do go Key Largo, it is the mixer and a high quality DI in one unit. The XLR outputs are transformer isolated, as a DI is, so you definitely want to use those XLR outputs to feed FOH. The house engineers will be perfectly happy not having to bring you a DI, and the Radial transformers are going to be better quality than most of the house DI's you will encounter at bars.

If you don't need EQ, the Key Largo sounds head and shoulders better than anything I've heard in the price range. Can't recommend it highly enough.

THIS

Key Largo is built like a tank and you get a high quality DI as well.

If you dont need eq (which you wont with the KL, youll do it from your keyboards)

also spend 20/some bucks to get a spare power supply for the Key Largo.

With the built in DI you will be every soundmans best friend.

Buy well for your gear purchases, dont go cheap. you will thank yourself.

I normally go stereo into my JMK Audio JM-110. It's a combination Di/ preamp. I go straight from that to the pair of RCF TT08As.

Every time I don't use the JMK on piano - and use one of the generic mixers mentioned (although I haven't used the Key Largo) - I highly notice a degraded sound. It's a Pro studio quality piece. The separate power supply you could use has a door stop. it's so beefy.

For multiple keyboards of course it wouldn't work but for one keyboard running stereo, it's pretty great. Very clean yet warm. Goes a long way in taking the "D" out of digital. ;)

Dave based on how you've described your setup, you can run a second keyboard into the CP4 1/8" stereo input and that signal would then flow through your preamp as well.

I do the same with my Nord electro. Still to this day, the best keyboard/module for this functionality (that I have used) was the Emu Proteus: Six outs, four of which iirc could be used as inputs.

6. On the E5 the external input is only routed to the headphone out. On the E6 it is always routed to the main outs. Both are nice in their way, but it would be even nicer to have both options available.

I use an old Mackie 1202-VLZ that really shows its age. It's not pretty, but it works every time. I run stereo out of the XLR main outs to my Mackie Thump 12s, and send out of the control room out to the FOH. Normally FOH is mono, but we play some things where the PA is supplied, and they like to have me run stereo.

The SK2 through the Vent coming out of the Thumps in stereo is a glorious sound.

XR18 here, preset for my keys setup so I don't even have to fire the laptop up on the gig, I just set it the night before the gig to whatever preset is setup for the rig I'm using that gig. Nobody can bump knobs and mess it up, and if I need to get into it for an emergency, I can by phone, or laptop into the ethernet if connection is bad. It handles a three keyboard rig, or two plus seperate vent if a small gig, plus a mic for my trumpet. I have it all prewired in a black box that hangs on the back of my z stand, along with the vent, and all the connections to all the different keyboards with labeled wires. I can get going in 10 minutes. And if need be, it'll handle the whole band if we need it to.

Interesting subject to control an analog stage mixer with a computer, apart from my own efforts I recall there has been a device that could. It's the shortest monitor latency possible to stay analog, and now ADC/DAC chain is probably preferable in most cases. You workstation might generate a certain "sound" with specific mixers. The question pf course should be: why? Is it distortion, soom deep digital products voodoo, or would you just like to add your choice of insert effects, eq and some amount of outboard effect equipment without which your sound doesn't come around to where it ought to be?

Ive got many mixers for different gigs.

But Ive been delegated to punishment playing small low paying clubs and Casinos.

Those gigs require a small footprint and I bought 3 x Strymons to make life enjoyable. Blofeld, SE-02 and HX-3 with a 1U PC with VSTis.

Each AUX gets a Strymon and AUX is a fantastic DSP Pitch Shifter.

Fully automated mixing with the Physis K4 and XITE-1 DSP Rack Mixer.

Without challenging myself and bettering my sound these gigs would be intolerable.

Seems like as the keyboard player, I'm the guy that folks expect to lug a mixer that the vocalist can plug into... and by the way, those keyboard monitors can do double-duty for PA in a pinch, right? Ummmm, got an extra mic and stand you can bring to the gig, Tommy?

Damn.

So, I carry my Mackie 1402 VLZ, a couple of QSC K10s, an Elvis mic & Atlas stand to the gigs. I don't care. Nobody's going to pay me the big bucks so I can bring a fancy-schmancy custom-made hand-wired mixer to a naked maiden's pool party in the 'burbs anytime soon...

Now are they? :love::boing:

OK. Will buy once, cry once as you guys like to say. Key Largo on the way.

Key Largo suggests a keyboard submixer? If that's your requirement, do you need the ability to mix in a aux send from the FoH desk? The floor-mounted Key Largo can't do this. However, it is suspected that the rackmount Radial KL8 can do this (there's a switch on the top that seems to control whether the AUX input is fed back to FoH) - I'm not sure if that's been confirmed.

Cheers, Mike.

Ive got the Key Largo.

Havent used it yet just threw on my rig post DSP Rack, then ran some hardware FX through the AUX.

Thing sounds great, too bad Radial doesnt add more channels or their 3 way voltage Tube designs.

I never a piece of gear from Radial that wasnt great quality.

They even have specially rated PSUs.

I might have gotten the KL back when I was in the market for a mixer but this was a showstopper. At the time I was unwilling to rely on FOH for my keys, even when we ran sound. These days I have been fine with FOH monitor feed giving me everything, but I just don't need a mixer currently :)
