Studio Workstation Desk

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a studio desk with a slide out 88 key keyboard. The biggest factor for me is cost. I've seen some but they are too expensive.

https://www.keyboardmag.com/gear/output-introduces-the-platform-studio-desk This one is about $800 plus $100 for shipping. The design looks simple enough that perhaps I could have someone here local build one for me.

I needed one as well...as it turned out, I just used my current one with a couple "ghetto" enhancements :)

1. - I had an old desktop from another office desk that I used in my garage to top some cabinets. It's much deeper than my current one so I simply laid it over top and boom a bigger desk. I was considering just getting a 4x8 nice plywood sheet before I remembered I had that thing.

2. I was trying to figure out how to either make or by a slide-out for either my 88 or 61...turns out, after we moved my studio has a tile floor. I have an old z stand that I no longer use live...I put some felt pads on the z stand and it slides super easy from under the desk. I needed to raise the desk up just a bit, not a problem, more felt pads under each leg :) Obviously on carpet this wouldn't work well, but you might be able to use plastic-bottom furniture-moving sliders...and the z stand legs do take up a bit of space. I widen them out as far as I can though and I have plenty of room.

For a couple different times and rooms I've just gone the DIY route. First setup was cinder blocks and long wide pine for shelving. Using cinder blocks can setup lots of ways, and final setup I had the holes in the cinder block pointing out so them create little cubby holes for storing stuff.

My most recent setup for recording and keyboard I got a dining room table since they are much deeper than normal desks. That gave me room to have computer and studio monitors in back and positioned wide apart. Plenty of room up front for keyboard and other things. Then discover sets of adjustable table legs and replaced the original leg with adjustable one for better working height. Then at office supply got a small cabinet on wheels that gave me a file drawer and to small drawers for supplies and etc. As needs great I bought a small studio rack for outboard gear. I put an rack accessory drawer on the bottom, and a power conditioner on top that had pull out lights and front and back AC sockets. Add in my good high back office chair and I had a space I could live in.

Both setups being a patchwork of thing made them very flexible for different setups over time.

Can't tell if the one you posted is big enough for an 88 key controller, but this one is.

You beat me to it! This person has done what you were describing; it looks cool, and I wouldn't call a "ghetto" enhancement, but just a brilliant idea

In fact, this kind of setup will work better for me. Besides, I am going to take a step further, and now I am deciding on an electric standing desk. I sit for too many hours everyday. Either I can use a keyboard stand with wheels, or I will look into having a slide-out keyboard shelf installed onto a standing desk. I've seen a height adjustable studio desk; it goes from $4,000. So the relatively high prices of electric standing desks are nothing in comparison, and it will do a lot more for me. Great things have humble beginnings - like a ghetto, right? Thanks for your post.

Here is another one from Studio Desk. There are a few models at different price points that hold 88-note Keyboards. They are much cheaper if you happen to be in Europe.

This is what I have. Normally about $400 but Guitar Center has it on sale right now for $249.99. If you can get by without a slide-out for the 88-note Keyboard this has plenty of rack space and is on wheels.

I had an old desktop from another office desk that I used...

This is the approach I used. Old office desk. Old racks. A couple slabs of wood nailed together to make the far left cabinet the same height as the racks and a few more slabs of wood nailed together (along with a can of black spray paint) to make the monitor / kbd / mouse shelf that my A-88 fits under. Highly functional for a fraction of the cost of all them lovely pro offerings.

These were taken a few months back. I now have the keyboard and the trackpad on the keyboard stand part just in front of the RD - more ergonomic.

Finally my studio electric standing desk is put together. https://i.imgur.com/p7mJMxJ.jpg

Initially, I ordered the iMovr Vigor frame ($750) but no email or shipping over 3 weeks. I cancelled the order and bought a $300 frame on Amazon. It can lift 320 LBS. The desktop is solid wood teak wood $240 when it was on sale. https://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/c/Teak-Island-Top-Williamsburg-Butcher-Block-Co.-TEAKBBIS6/10041889 I found out that teak wood is lighter than maple or oak wood in weight.

The height clearance for the keyboard is 7 inch, and it can be adjusted, which means just about any keyboard will fit in there. I bought a cable management bracket, a dual monitor mounting arm to save some desktop real estate. Some of these desk organizers on Amazon will work well for my purpose. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YTYGT6F/?coliid=I1LEDP7ZDFGAQC&colid=STT85M0K9J9V&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I have the WS7500 with the 2U rack option. It works fine for me and the drawer holds a 49 key controller. I don't have a lot of extra space. Besides my FA-08 & Deep Mind 12 are right next to it. There is a lot of space on the top for modules. If space is a concern and your on a budget I highly recommend it. It would be nice to have an 88-key slide out but I really don't think its critical for me. I can always just swivel my chair and the full keys are right there.

Boards: Kurzweil SP-6, Roland FA-08, VR-09, DeepMind 12

Modules: Korg Radias, Roland D-05, Bk7-m & Sonic Cell

The good ones are expensive. You can do no worse than to buy particle board kits at the office supply stores; they don't even stay together for five minutes. The ones shown here are professional thought and specific to the needs of musicians. If I had a wider room, I might consider one. I'll be curious to see what ends up showing here as an affordable starter model as the competition is fierce and it's time-consuming to keep track of what all is available.

What I did instead, over 15 years ago, was buy a nice oak hardwood slab with four very robust and adjustable carbon steel legs. Sturdy as can be! Not that big though; no room for additional alternate monitors or a second computer. I even bought it at my most hated store, IKEA (hated because even if you have your catalogue number you can't just walk in-and-out with a quick one-stop payment and pick-up; it reminds me of my visits to Russia with separate lines for each stage of the process). The hope was to buy the add-ons for keyboard tray etc. later on, then they stopped making them.

I use ISO Acoustics risers for my 5" near field monitors (my room is too small to work with larger monitors as one should obey the proper triangle principle for placement). I now prefer that to having a back-tray width-wise riser, but I do wish I had a roll-out keyboard tray beneath the table so I could use that with a MIDI controller. I still can't find one to retrofit to my "computer table" though.
