And yes, it is a "kick drum" vs. a "bass drum", due to the pedal! An orchestral bass drum (which can get quite large, but not THAT large) is not usually (though sometimes -- it depends!) played with a pedal.

I find that drummers tend to call them "bass drums", but in the context of a drum kit where it's played with the pedal, I like the term "kick drum" as it's completely unambiguous.

As you say, orchestral bass drums are typically played with a hand-held beater - as are bass drums used by marching bands and the like.

Cheers, Mike

I remember hearing a LONG time ago that the term Kick drum came from that's how it was played before the bass drum pedal was invented, so it would be in the early New Orleans, Dixieland bands.

Docbop, you are correct. I didn't want to be long-winded so I over-simplified my quickie statement. I have noticed in recent years that Bass Drum is coming back into fashion as a preferred term in genres outside of classical music.

Yep, the world's biggest mic. Does anyone still have a link to the world's biggest keyboard? It was posted here a few years back.

this is why no one wants to help keyboard players schlep their gear around.

I guess this then brings on the question of who sells the largest gear cart?

most definitely. I will need everyone's opinion on it and where to buy it.

The total weight cannot exceed 25 pounds. I assume the hugomongus keyboard is made of paper mâché and marshmallows.

Plus a gig bag in case I need a free weight work out.

Or if my 3 roadies need a work out.
