Tom Williams
Curious if someone hears 'triton paradox' sound go both ways at the same time? Well, there seems to be some "cheating" going on -- the tritone sequences all seem to include multi-octave compound sounds, with near-sine components, so that there can easily be octave confusion. Add non-linear frequency response (due to age or to other damage), and it would be quite normal to not work out which direction the intervals go. For me personally, there has always been a difficulty knowing which octave some instruments sound at. I usually can't tell whether a violin is at G5 or G6, for example. Regarding the tri-tone illusion in particular, my aging ears tended to perceive all of the intervals going up.
