Advice needed - iPad stand and software

Recommended Posts

For years I have used printed cheat sheets when needed, whether it is for a chord chart, or lyrics. But today made me rethink that.

I have been adding a lot of songs recently to my list that I sing in my band, and have printed the lyrics out. Problem is, I have no way to solidly secure them where I can see and read, unless I tape them to my Hammond. This is not working, because of the tape residue. I will not have that on my favorite board.

Plus, we played an indoor/outdoor gig. We were undercover, but there were no walls. A storm came up, and the tarps that help protect the stage were lowered, but the wind was blowing very hard. Several of my sheets blew away, so I will have to replace them. No big deal, but it got me thinking of an alternative.

My bass player has a tablet that he uses for his lyrics sheets. He has a foot pedal to advance the page.

I have an iPad pro, and an Android tablet. I'm thinking about using one or the other. Yes, I could go with a music stand, but I want something that I will be able to read even in a low light situation.

I need some advice on the app to use, and a stand.

For the stand I'm thinking about something that would attache to my mike stand. I use a Pyle tripod stand that is thicker than standard, so I would need something that could clamp on that.

As far as the app, I would basically need something that would display what would most likely be a Word document, and keep the screen active for at least 5 minutes. Wouldn't due to finish my solo, go to sing the last verse, and the screen has gone dark.

Any suggestions would be welcomed

This is what I use (made by Hercules and currently on sale) and really like it for my Ipad. I have an Ipad Air 2, not a pro so check size capabilities but it attaches right to my keyboard stand and allows me to place my Ipad right over my top keyboard, very easy to read lyrics cause it's pretty much in front of my face but doesn't block my face to the audience. As far as apps, there are a few on Ipad like "Pages" and acrobat reader that can store PDF files. That is what I use. Change your display settings (in the settings menu) to always stay on, or at least 15 min before going to "sleep"

Just started using My Lyric Book and like it so far. Sounds like it might fit your needs. Only comes for Apple, not Android.

You can set it to not time out when viewing a song sheet. It doesn't seem to use much battery. I used it for a 3hr gig without draining it much on an iPad mini.

On song... costs 29 dollars , and you can add your pdf files to it, create set lists etc...if you choose toBuy chords/lyrics from and online spot, it can usually transpose it for you. Also has a metronome, and you can write on it...

I use mine for praise music ,but you can use it for anything

I use an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet for this. The app is Fakebook Pro which cost $3. What's cool about that app is on their website is all of the Real Books in pdf format. Over 5,000 songs. After I downloaded all that into the tablet I found they were all indexed and searchable. Very nice. I also put iRealPro on it. For my own charts I created I just take a pic of them with my phone and import them in. If all you need are lyrics, piece of cake, take a pic and there they are. I have about a dozen different set lists created. Can't help you with a stand mount, I just put it on my regular music stand.

Since you have both an iPad and an Android tablet I would use Fakebook Pro on the Android and use the iPad for other stuff like maybe put one of the IOS sound modules on it for extra sounds if you could use that.

Another option is the Korg Module itself includes a pretty cool looking setlist and pdf chart/lyrics ability built in. I don't have an iPad but I'm considering buying one to use either the Korg or Sampletank sound modules.

I think the K&M iPad holders are the best, and have purchased ones for an iPad 2 and an iPad Mini. Haven't got one yet for my 2018 iPad Pro, as I'm waiting until I can buy just the cradle (bearing plate in K&M parlance) and swap it onto the other parts I already own.

You'd probably want the 19791 iPad holder, as it comes with the clamp-on arm to clamp onto the middle of a mic stand:

This is the overview of all the K&M tablet holders (it's a little bit dated):

https://blog.k-m.de/en/all-ipad-smartphone-and-tablet-holder/

The 19790 is the one for larger tablets that screws directly on to the top of a mic stand. It comes in 3/8" thread and 5/8" thread versions:

https://products.k-m.de/us/Multimedia-Equipment/Holders/19790-Tablet-PC-stand-holder-black-5-8

I think it's the case that the 19790 3/8" thread is simply the 5/8" thread version with an adapter pre-installed.

K&M's US distributor Connolly Music is super responsive to any inquiries also:

edit:

There are some videos that show the holders well here:

I use the IK Multimedia iKlip Xpand. I like it because I can use it with my phone, iPad, or iPad mini. It works for the iPad pro as well.

You can use it in conjunction with the iKip Stage app as well. However, I purchased the ForScore app a long time ago and that is what I have been using for the last 7-8 years probably.

I got my iKlip in a package deal with their bluetooth footpedal

I bought the Triad for that reason. It reminds me of Cross Fit equipment.

Ive been reading about iPad gadgetry and software here for a while now.

So many options and choices, and while I prefer my PC and DSP Rack for number crunching the iPad Pro, software and gadgetry, Im glad I listened to folks here in the know.

A most valued group of performers and a great place to learn new methods.
