My Grandpa's favorite. He has a Showman amp because that is what Dick played. I liked him also. According to people on the North Shore he was just a real regular guy.

One of the greats in the history of Rock guitar. Been way too many passing over in the past several years. Keep hammering on Dick!

Sorry to see this. He was a true showman and stalwart, hanging around after his shows to autograph albums - even bootlegs!

As Jimi said, "You'll never hear Surf Music again . . ."

Rest In Peace, sir.

Arguably, Dick Dale introduced “shredding” to rock & roll audience.

He started my decades long love affair with instrumental surf music, despite being landlocked 99% of my life. What can you say: First among equals? Often imitated but never duplicated? All that and more.

Through his tunes, he sold more than music, he sold a vision. Not many musicians can say they did that.

Thanks, Danny A.

I hate it when an artist gets pegged for one thing (unless that's really all they were good at).
Then ppl roboticaly cite that as though that's an homage or an appreciation.
I'm not yer major DD fan but I know there 's more to that cat than surf gtr.
In his later years, for example, he became a fervent ecologist.

This song, while easily pegged as a surf hit, is actually a case of cross-cultural artistic vision.
10- pts to who can explain what I mean.

This tribute, from an unlikely source, is just for fun

This one, from Dale to some frgotten people, is not

Still with me ?
Here's some info from the man himself.
If ya think "King O Surf Gtr" wraps it up, prepare to be surprised.

His obit was on the front page of today's LA Times, continuing to a half page inside, with color pix. Pretty high praise for a guitar slinger.
And, yes, Misirlu is claimed by about a half dozen Middle Eastern countries as their own folk tune.

THIS JUST IN !

Apparently Dale, besides appearing in several teen flicks in the 1960s & cartoon & game VOs later, actually had a small part as an Elvis impersonator in the Marilyn Monroe film LET'S MAKE LOVE (1960).
From the NYTimes obit:

After the family moved to Southern California in around 1955, Mr. Dale’s father quit his job at an aerospace and defense company to manage his son’s career. Mr. Monsour booked him in talent shows and movies, including a cameo as an Elvis Presley impersonator in the Marilyn Monroe movie “Let’s Make Love.”

Following links in that article I found...

There is a YTube page featuring "LET'S MAKE LOVE" but since it's a $4 fee to watch the film, I held back from posting it here...although it's there if ya want to see it.

Slightly OT, but does anyone else recall an Amp that had a built-in "Surf" effect? I know a friend had one back in '68/69, and I thought it was a Fender, but trying to search, I keep getting shunted to "How to get that Surf Guitar Sound" links.

From what I recall, it wasn't like a built-in Phaser, in that it didn't change the sound of the Guitar, it was just a soft, "whoosh-ing" White Noise effect, that was either On or Off: I don't even think it had a Rate knob?

It had to have been something Dick Dale inspired, and given his relationship with Fender, I'm sure it was a Fender Amp.

Been nearly 50 years, brother . . .

I've been scrolling through data on various Fender Amp models, with no luck so far.

Now, not to second-guess you, but is it possible that it was a pedal... ? Here are a couple of examples (their ilk first came out in the '60s)- and at the very least, these illustrate the fact that these specific "effects" were available and being marketed towards electric-guitarists...

Even today, some stuff still hasn’t been put on the Internet...at least, not anywhere easy to find. It may simply be so niche that only a few people have ever publicly discussed them in the Information Age,

You guys crack me up! TCM( Turner Classic Movies) channel just showed it a few weeks ago, and will likely show it again in the near future. It gets shown there about two or three times a year. And since TCM is part of my cable package, there's no extra fee to watch anything on that channel. wink I used to have it on an old VHS cassette, but it didn't hold up. Might have my daughter find it and "burn" it for me.

@Caevan - This is from back before my memory cells got hacked, so to speak, so I'm sure about it being an effect on an Amp; none of us had any pedals at the time, not even a Wah. I also recall that this was one of very few of our friends whose parents would buy a real Strat and Fender Amp.

@d - It's not like I cannot remember my buddy's name, it's more about the likelihood of finding any of those folks from back then, or their memory being any better than mine.

"Surf sound"?

Think about it...DID they use a special amp, with a special setting for it? freak

I thought it was just a certain level of reverb, and a WHOLE LOTTA treble!

I didn't think amps were that advanced back in the early to mid '60's. wink

@ Winston, back in the early surf days circa '63 Leo came out with a tube reverb unit that looked like a piggy back. It would sit on top of an amp that did not have reverb like a Bassman with 15's. Lots of clean volume was needed and a lot of headroom. The Fender tube amp is the bottom line for getting "surf sound". The 1st Fender Deluxe amps did not have reverb so my buddy (lead guitar in our Ventures band 66-69 that played a lot of surf) bought one of those reverb units and wah-lah instant surf sound.

In 64 Fender came out with the Deluxe Reverb, in 65 the Twin Reverb and in 68 the Vibrolux. These amps became the standard for combo amps and players that wanted to get that surf sound. One of the things these amps have in common is the Tremolo effect which is also used in surf tunes. The amps had a speed and intensity knob for adjusting the amount wanted. Some tunes used tremolo a lot on intros and then kicked it off, some tunes used it all the way through along with some syrupy reverb. The amps came with a dual foot switch so you could kick them on or off. Later in life Boss and other makers made some nice sounding reverb pedals. I would run one in front of my Twin as I liked some light reverb on all the time and then kick in the reverb pedal with more for surf tunes along with my Delay pedal.

Anyway, that's the only surf effect(s) I remember on Fender amps...newer modeling amps and effect multi pedals like my Fender Floor can get a lot of surf sound with delay, tremolo, reverb, etc. and patches set up for cruising in and out of those sounds for different tunes. Hope this brings back a few memories and good luck on your search! Have fun dude! cool

ps. Here's the surf sound you are looking for...it's the 3rd Rock From the Sun Theme song:

cool
