Please keep up the good work.

Could I pay or donate to have FB permanently broken ?
[ has nothing to do with the app on my devices or bookmarked or having a login].
wink

Ok, so it's not just me. Instagram is also off. I was worried cause I just switched internet providers and was supposed to be getting better service.

there's a story about Zuck having a secret ' escape chute' in his office.

Maybe he took a ride and lost his keycard which prevents entry to the building.
Could have caused a 'where's Mark panic' - in a good way

Thought about how this temporary, partial malfunction affected me. Started extrapolating how a complete loss of internet/digital device connectivity would affect me. Realized how scary that was, stopped thinking about it and started drinking.

I think some folks have gone nutso over social media. Similar to other online
or off line addictions.

FB is back. The stock price has dropped to $169 per share. I look at stock price
as an indicator of future viability.

What I don't get is the people who seem to set up accounts to just open their big mouths. Twitter is just as bad.

That said, Facebook is very useful for keeping in contact with people after you've moved a long ways away. That's what I use it for. Some of them are only on Instagram too. So I have an account there. But I don't use it for much otherwise. Just to keep up with old friends who I maybe can't reach by phone or email.

Through Facebook, I've found MANY gigs, friends (who are relevant to the music industry), job leads (for myself and friends), and so on and so forth. Even the old sucky 'MySpace' was extremely useful for me. This is all on top of keeping in touch with old friends...etc. I also manage my choir rehearsals/activities through Facebook messanger. It works really well!

As far as making public posts on my own timeline, I make one post every other year.

If you run a band it really helps and it's free advertising. You use it, don't let it use you.

I've had way more luck getting gigs and meeting other musicians through Craigslist than with anything else. In fact I got my day job through Craigslist too. Indispensable resource.

FB, on the other hand, just lets me know on a daily basis who feels like griping about stuff.

That's right! I've been using this method for the past 5 years, and it's awesome! I have different groups for Sopranos, Altos...etc... . Obviously it saves a lot of time...but the best part is that people kind of feel obligated to look at the sheet music/backing track or whatever material it is i'm sending. They can't tell me they didn't receive the e-mail, or it was in the spam folder. It just works!

Most people - myself included - fail to make a connection with a tool, platform or whatever and say negative things. My personal profile is public. It's just i'm not interested in making daily general posts. I use FB in a different way that works for me. I could care less if people post a pic of their subway sandwich. It doesn't bother me at all. I completely ignore anything and everything that's not of interest to me. It's ridiculously easy to do!

Yes. This is the ' my personal universe ' view.

Without a doubt FB provides a 'free' utility to its many users.
Been that way for over a decade.

But the issues surface as one expands and understands the larger operational view of FB.
This has been well publicized and many have simply deleted FB, the messenger
from their smart phones. This is just 1 instance.

Some care about a bigger picture of a popular site and some could care less.
It goes both ways.

If i respected my privacy and individual rights more, i would probably take exception to FB’s business mode and practices. My wife hates it and talks about their practices a lot. I just don’t care. Google is far worse imo.

Scary big ass companies there. They are total stalkers, you can’t look at a DI box on the web without getting ads for DIs for the next 2 weeks, which is until it decides you were looking at something else and you get ads for that. My wife is certain it listens to what she is saying just in conversation (with phone “off”). She said she’ll talk to a friend about new towels and the next day she’s getting bombarded by ads for towels.

FB sells your info, thats creepy. IDGAF, but i’m Pretty sure I should ... their ability to manipulate the world is getting to be troubling ...

Edit - I use FB as a vehicle for music info. I post gigs, 95% of my “friends” are just people in music or people who are reliable to go to a lot of local shows. It does help boost band interest, and its easy free. I don’t really go on it otherwise.

And that is pretty much how I view it. I have people and relatives in Italy and the US so it's pretty cool to use for that. If your a musician it can be a available tool for that reason alone for networking.

I think more like your wife, possibly.

FB , per there folks on top, have played fast and loose with personal data, and have been inconsistent, talk nice, when called on the carpet. There have been several reports about their business practices, as they have a huge trove of personal data to manipulate and market to any party around the world, for any purpose.

As such, I refuse to support FB. Even though its easy utility. Its hard for some
to justify using FB when you review their business practices.

Not trying to change anyone's use of FB. There is always room for a few positions on something like FB usage.

I have a very dim view of FB and all social media--I think it is a "net negative" for society and certainly it didn't help my stress levels. I won't reward that company (or others if they engage in similar practices) for being irresponsible with "news" and privacy issues. I ditched it just like I ditched cable "news" and I've honestly felt a lot better personally without that need to "check in" all the time. Social media is like junk food for the mind--they engineer their products to get you hooked on something unhealthy (IMO). Their vested interests are for everyone to keep gobbling down their crap, so they certainly aren't going to do the "right thing" unless forced to.

That said, whatever floats your boat, I don't bother others about it. I'd probably still be on it despite my dislike for it if I had a business to promote.

That is well said and reasoned. Some of us have options and can take a firm stand when a popular and very large site engages in questionable behavior.

But if folks are trying to make a living and derive important value from the site, that's completely their call. I do think there are other options but it would a fair amount of effort - thats where the rubber hits the road.

I think motivation is connected with decisions we make. Or not make.

Social media and tech companies "have a content-moderation problem that is fundamentally beyond the scale that they know how to deal with," said Becca Lewis, a researcher at Stanford University and the think tank Data & Society.

"The financial incentives are in play to keep content first and monetization first."

Maybe recent events in Christchurch NZ might force FB to find a solution as to how they moderate their content.

I think cos like FB will have to be forced into having upfront business controls. I believe our cousins in the UK, Europe are seriously looking at measures to motivate the co's.

Well Youtube and FB have developed sophisticated algorithms to detect and prevent the publication of copyrighted music so they must be able to get these coders to do the same for this type of content.

Somethings not right when it is easier to live stream mass murder than it is to live stream a performance of a cover of a Supertramp song.

As long as moderation interferes with money-making, it's kind of naive to think it's going to be effective. And it will interfere. And in any case, when there is a demand there will always be a supply (ask the DEA). As long as the public is addicted to instant information and ability to broadcast their every thought to the world some site or product will make it happen. I think it sucks but that horse ain't going back into the barn....best I can do is stay out of it personally, and hope I don't get affected by some of the results (anti-vax, people checking phones in cars etc).

Yeah, their AI sucks. Locked me out of my account once for sharing a post about a lost dog. crazy When it needs to work it doesn't, and when it is working it's flagging stuff that doesn't need to be flagged.
