While waiting in an airport lounge to fly home last night, we got a call from our manager to inform us that we just won the Grammy for chamber music/small ensemble performance. The CD is "Landfall" by Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet, & I was extremely honored to record, mix & co-produce this incredible music.

Yeah. I would think NObody can win if NOT nominated, and if nominated would at least try to be at the ceremony, so what about that? And d... I do believe the Academy forbids Oscar winners from selling their statuettes, making them prone to having their win nullified and removed from any records that are kept. I'm not sure how the Grammy people deal with it. Whitefang

Selling an Academy award is not truly a legal situation as far as laws but it's built into the agreement that winners sign. In the past more than 1 winner has sold their statue & the Academy, when aware of that, has taken steps to reclaim the item.

After some reflection, I have a couple Qs. [Casual readers, please note that, while some of these perhaps have humorous aspects , none are intended as anything less than sincere (& I think SF knows this) Qs to someone who may be able to hip us to some of the bg of showbiz]
"The mgr/biz office was notified of the win"... - OK/makes sense, musos were on tour...but what was the time frame in regard to the whole process from nomination to notification ? The nominations were announced sometime last fall. That's when the 75 or 80 records which got through the initial filters in order to be voted on by the Academy members who are in that same category are winnowed down to 5 most deserving. - Can nominees nominate themselves (kinda like how it works in more strictly PR situations like getting onto the HWood Blvd "Walk O'Fame") or are nominees selected by various committees ? The records labels submit records in the categories where they think have a shot. So there may be hundreds at that point. The Academy narrows this down to about 75 which are submitted to voting members to come up with the 5 nominees. Every Academy member is allowed to vote for nominees in the (I think it is) two categories which he or she has indicated are their areas of expertise. So the classical members will not be nominating for best hip hop record, etc. The 5 nominees in each category are then voted on by the entire voting membership. - How far in advance of the presentations (mostly done prior to the TV filming) is anyone informed of a win ? We all find out when the envelope is opened. Nobody is told before the presentation. - Does everyone involved practically in a project get one of the trophies ? No, I believe for the category we were in (Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance) there is one statuette. I will get a certificate, which I will frame & place alongside the three previous nominations on the wall in my recording studio. - In light of the fact that in some cases winners of some awards (such as Oscars) have sold them later, are there any agreements recipients must sign to actually receive their awards ? I haven't heard about that. I'll ask my client who won 2 years ago about it. - What particulars otherwise can you share w/us ? Everything which is not one of the big deal pop music awards is given out in a non-broadcast earlier afternoon ceremony at the convention center next door. That's about 90 awards, zipped through in about 2 hours. All the Best Traditional Blues, Best Native American, Best Hawaiian, Best Spoken Word, Best Children's, Jazz, Classical, etc happens then. Then everybody goes over to the Staples Center (where there is absolute crap for food) and watches the broadcast live, where they spend 4 hours giving out the last 10 awards. There is no parking at the Convention Center/Staples Center for the Grammy. You park elsewhere (I forget now, maybe the Coliseum or Sports Arena) & they shuttle you to the venue. Security. However, speaking of security, everybody goes through a metal detector to get into the broadcast at Staples Center. When I went in 2006 I wore my kilt. One of the accessories to traditional Scottish garb is a small knife which is inserted into the top of the knee socks. It's called a Sgian Dubh. They didn't see it on their scan & I waltzed right in.
