On Nord keyboards, especially the Stage 3, how well does it work when using a midi controller to play the Nord organ section? Is there a master setting that allows the midi controller to play the organ section always, regardless of the preset? Or would it have to be pre-programmed per each individual preset? I was thinking of getting the Stage 3, selling my SK1, and sometimes using my Roland A-49 (or perhaps another keyboard) to play the organ section of the Nord.

On the Nord Stage 2 you assign global channels to the organ, piano and synth sections. The channel assignments do not change with the patch. So what you're saying is very much how it works. I believe the Stage 3 would be no different.

I recently purchased a used DB-1 and absolutely love it for the Nord stage 3 organ.

You want me to start this song too slow or too fast?

Forte7, Nord Stage 3, XK3c, OB-6, Arturia Collection, Mainstage, MotionSound KBR3D. A bunch of MusicMan Guitars, Line6 stuff

I never tried that, but I believe on on Stage 3 (which is different from Stage 2) you can assign an instrument (organ) to external keyboard in dual keyboard mode.

Its no different..

You can assign the B slot to an external instrument
And keep the aslot asigned to the stage3
Thats easiest, its called dual keyboard mode

Also you can assign a single instrument slot to an ext midi controller
Just set to locall off and assign a midi channel..

Probably another dumb question, but can you have one external controller for organ, and another external controller for the synth section? All set up in global settings?

Yes, but you'll need a MIDI Merge box and match the controller channels to the section channels.

The MIDI implementation is quite different from the NS2>NS3! You will have to read the manual and any addendums and read carefully through the OS update log.

NS2- 6 different channels for instruments (3 per slot/panel) plus dual kb and global channels.

NS3- early OS was 2 channels (1 per slot/panel).

NS3- later OS is 2 channels (1 per slot/panel assignable to one specific instrument section).

No matter the OS version, the NS3 is less flexible. I have no idea why they would do such a thing. Iím happy with the latest and greatest but there is always something that is ruined or botched in the midst of the upgrades.

NS3 update 1.5 added back some functionality, I believe Dual KB can now rigger either one specific instrument section or one entire panel.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our new video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out!
