Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle" should get an award for best palm glissandos. Wikipedia credits the organ playing to Joachim Young, and while I'm not familiar with him, he clearly had chops. Not only are the glissandos great, but he really works the drawbars, Leslie, and swell pedal well to keep the organ timbre interesting and animated.

I don't know if there was an effect on the organ to give the opening gliss that whooshing sound (12 seconds in), but it just sounds fantastic...

Nah. Emerson's were better.

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our new video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out!

RIP. Memory Eternal. Great jazz pianist. Paid the bills playing with Boz and on Steve Miller records. He died way too young. A fantastically talented musician.

I'm sorry, but the King of Smears is Mark Stein.

(This song isn't the best example, but I just stumbled on it tonight and wanted to share it:)

+1!

Matthew Fisher had a pretty good one breaking into the final chorus of WSOP, too.

I think his glissandi are great, but what really does it for me in that song is the times it makes it sound like there is a loose wire or something.

There have been other threads in the past about his playing on this track. It's just flat out great Hammond playing, with glissandi, expression pedal work, drawbar manipulation and staccato playing that just drives the tune. Every time it comes on the radio I still crank it up just like the first time I heard it on vinyl.

Here's an extended version that seems to have the organ a bit louder in the mix. I wish I could find the stems somewhere where the organ is isolated.

Just found this version without vocals. You can hear his playing a little more clearly...

I have always thought Fly Like an Eagle is one of the best examples of rock Hammond playing. I too turn it up when it comes on my radio.

A lot of pop music buried the Hammond behind guitars and drums. This song is unusual because the Hammond is so prominent. So it seems to me some credit is due to the mix and production decisions.

In addition to some of the folks already mentioned, I've always dug Seth Justman's work with the J. Geils Band -- especially on their live stuff (which imho is where they were at their best). He does some wicked palm smears in "First I Look at the Purse" from the Full House album.

Yes, the live recordings really highlight what a badass on the B3 he is. AND - he used to have an absolute gaggle of leslies on stage.

Sal had one of his white Leslie's in his collection. They were painted with Lead pain I remember him telling me so it was dangerous to have them around.

I saw the Steve Miller Band back in about the mid-90's and it stands out in my mind as a great set, I have no idea if the keyboard player was the same musician on the record but I remember he recreated Fly Like an Eagle live very accurately nuance for nuance, very impressive.

I think my favorite Hammond organ playing (which includes beautifully placed palm smears) is Neil Larsen playing on “Hallelujah”. Leonard Cohen, Live In London.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

So true. Pop music emphasizes the dance elements. Usually it is the guitar, bass, and drums. Playing static chords on the Hammond is not exactly a dance element. "Fly Like A Gaggle of Eagles" spotlighted the Hammond dancing along with the groove. I wish more players had learned that technique.

Fly Like an Eagle one of those songs I've heard so many times that my brain had sort of relegated it to background noise. It is an absolute joy to give it a fresh listen and really appreciate and enjoy it!

My main band does the J. Geils version of that tune, and a couple of other J. Geils tunes. Very underrated band, especially live.

Just don't get any on the wood. The crap makes it almost impossible to refinish properly.

Really, the secret AFAICT is just the right angle and the right spot.

Nice, did you all know the synth in Fly Like An Eagle was an SH-2000 on the clarinet setting?
Favorite Hammond smears, I don’t know there’s a lot of them. Maybe a gospel song or 2 that I’ve listened to. The music I listen to has more YC-45D and Farfisa VIP/Professional/Fast organs. Some of the settings on the organ sound great.
I think this is Hammond though. Maybe a YC-45D through a Leslie because I hear the vibes setting in this song.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bl1_I_4WK0o&t=60
No matter what organ it is, nice smears by Pompi S. Solo around 1:00.
Here’s Steve Miller - The Window. Nice SH-2000 intro.

+100. The way that man makes that Hammond sing completely knocks me out - especially the pedal and drawbar control.

Wikipedia says it’s Steve Miller on an ARP Odyssey, but that could very well be wrong.

This is also a technique that a lot of guys use to much on a Hammond.

What outcaster said^^^

I play in a band that has a second keys player. He's used to using a Hammond sound to pad out a lot of songs, especially ballads. He LOVES using big smears to bring in choruses/intros/endings. Completely inappropriate.

Palm Smears? ...... How quaint. Use the entire forearm baby for doing smears! LOL.

Real Men Smear, my smears on the tune 'Few and Far Between' by Shannon Curfman with my old project The Sunset Rebels...the smear at 2:49 was a smear ending with a small enveloped rumble tail at the end of it, I like doing that (tail end rumble) but it depends on the guitar player and the tune...Ron's (guitar) playing here was perfect for it ...tune was also. Wasn't a full foreman smear but I like those also at times...builds tension. I use then sparingly maybe 10-15 percent of any given gig night (smears in general)...If I'm not gigging good Hammond/Leslie clone...I tend not to smear...I get a bagel with a smear instead..

The palm smear occurs at 2:49 to 2:52 in below YT vid. The song itself starts at 1:30 .. another smear in the tune at 3:19 before the main guitar solo... there are a few other smaller smears in there 2 or so.. Using an original Hammond XK-3, Leslie 145/Speakeasy Pre, Hammond Vol. Pedal :

Anyone know who played organ on "Living in the U.S.A."?

Wikipedia shows Jim Peterman, but it's been wrong before.

No smears in that track, but there are some wonderful coughs and burps from the Hammond.

Brute force smears through stadium sound system courtesy Ricky Peterson, which visibly shakes the camera trying to record the event. evil Comment afterwards: "It's kinda fun to be able to blast that!" grin

Wow, Respect. I didn't think anyone else knew who he was. I've been intrigued by him for a long time. I think everyone on those Al Green records could probably be replaced EXCEPT Al and the organ player; ALTHOUGH, the rest of the guys must have been pretty special as well since the 'groove' they created was straight from groove heaven.

Actually Tom Scholz is originally a keyboard player. I have a 1987 guitar magazine where he admitted he played keyboards in many cover bands and only learned to play guitar because of too many frustrations clubbing with guitar players with crap tone. And if you knew anything about guitar amps in those days (I do, having grown up with a guitar playing brother), you would understand why most guitar players during that era sounded like crap.

Wikipedia says it’s Steve Miller on an ARP Odyssey, but that could very well be wrong.

I recall a Roland ad in an early issue of Contemporary Keyboard around that time, with Steve Miller proclaiming the virtues of the Roland synth he used.

On the subject of Fly Like an Eagle - i think it should be the gold standard for what a clonewheel should be capable of. I've yet to encounter any that comes close.

You're talking about Hi Rhythm, the Hi Records house band. The bass player and guitar player on all that stuff were Rev. Hodges brothers, Leroy and Teenie, which explains a lot of the tightness of the grooves, and Al Jackson or Howard Grimes on drums are also pretty hard to replace as well. I would argue that, in general, the Al Green records, as great as they were, intentionally weren't as greasy as some of the other Hi Records artists because Al was Hi's biggest artist.

I'm 46, but I was fortunate enough to get hip to Syl Johnson's Hi stuff back in the late 80's when I was in my mid-teens, and by my late teens I'd discovered Al, and then Ann Peebles, and Otis Clay, O.V. Wright, George Jackson and other Hi artists. Willie Mitchell's production and his taking the Hodges brothers under his wing when then were still in their teens was a huge part of the Hi sound.

Back in September I got to do a 3 day session, playing Wurly, with Rev. Hodges, his brother Leroy, Howard Grimes, and a really serious "younger" Memphis guitarist, Joe Restivo (Teenie passed a few years ago). Being in the room with that sound and playing with it live was a trip. Getting to watch and listen to how Rev. Hodges plays the organ in the same room was one of the most informative experiences I've had in a LONG time.

Thanks for that. I love 'first person' stories, experiences, history, and perceptions about artists that I admire, especially those that made their mark but are not exactly household names.
